Alexander Richard Pettyfer, known professionally as Alex Pettyfer, was born in 1990 in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. He is the son of Lee Ireland, an interior decorator, and Richard Pettyfer, an actor. He has a younger half-brother, James Ireland, a junior tennis player, from his mother’s marriage to property developer Michael Ireland.
Pettyfer began modeling at the age of seven, starting with a campaign for Gap. He later appeared in advertisements for various products, including yogurt brands. A significant early moment in his career was meeting designer Ralph Lauren in a New York toy store, which led to further modeling opportunities. He appeared in his first commercial at just six years old.
As a schoolboy, Pettyfer participated in numerous theatrical productions, taking roles such as Willy Wonka in a staging of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk, and playing parts in adaptations of Robin Hood. He was educated at several independent schools, including The Mall School in Twickenham and Lambrook Haileybury in Berkshire. He later attended Millfield School in Street, Somerset, and Shiplake College in Oxfordshire. Upon completing his GCSEs, he enrolled at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London to further pursue acting.
