Alexandra Burke is an English singer-songwriter and actress who was born on August 25, 1988, in Islington, London, England to soul and R&B singer Melissa Bell and David Burke. She has four siblings who she often had to look after while her mother was out touring with her band. Burke had a passion for singing at an early age and began singing and dancing at the age of five. She even sang at the island country of Bahrain when she was only nine-years-old. At the age of twelve, Burke became a contestant on the television show "Star for a Night" and was the youngest contestant. She placed second on the show losing to Joss Stone.
When she was still twelve, her mother had her sing over the phone for Stevie Wonder and Jean Carne. Carne was so impressed by the young Burke's voice that she asked her to perform with her at one of her shows. Having already performed across countries, Burke attended Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington where she studied for her GCSEs. Burke went on to compete on the British reality television show "The X Factor" in 2005 although she didn't win she was in the top 21 contestants in the competition. In 2008, she returned to compete on "The X Factor" but this time she won. Winning the show was enough to give her international exposure and on February 13, 2009, Burke signed a multi-million dollar, five-album record deal in the US with Epic Records.
