Antonio Juan Fargas was born on August 14, 1946, in New York City. He is the son of Manuel Fargas, a Puerto Rican city employee, and Mildred Fargas, who was of Trinidadian and Tobagonian descent. The Fargas family was large, with Antonio growing up alongside eleven siblings. Before launching his acting career, Antonio worked as a store clerk in a local shop.
In 1979, Antonio Fargas married Taylor Hastie. Their marriage lasted nine years before ending in divorce. He later remarried Sandra Reed. Antonio is the father of Justin Fargas, a former NFL running back who played for the Oakland Raiders. Justin is an alumnus of the University of Southern California. His wife, Nikki Caldwell, is a basketball coach and formerly led the LSU women's basketball team.
Antonio Fargas has an estimated net worth of approximately $20 million. According to an article published by The Hollywood Reporter, he was appointed as a brand ambassador for NBC’s COZI TV network.
Fargas has largely stayed away from social media platforms such as Twitter and Tumblr, which is not uncommon for individuals of his generation.
Antonio Fargas became prominent in the 1960s for his role in the satirical comedy film Putney Swope. He gained continued recognition during the 1970s through his involvement in the Blaxploitation film genre, appearing in notable movies like Across 110th Street and Foxy Brown. His most iconic role, however, came in the form of “Huggy Bear,” an informant character on the popular 1970s television series Starsky & Hutch.
In the mid-1980s, Fargas appeared in the ABC soap opera All My Children, further establishing his reputation on television. He later featured in the music video for the Backstreet Boys hit single “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),” confirming his enduring presence in popular culture.
Antonio made guest appearances on popular sitcoms such as The Steve Harvey Show and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In addition, he gained a following in the United Kingdom through his participation in the British reality series I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
In 2009, Fargas played a recurring role as “Doc” in the TV series Everybody Hates Chris. The year before, he was cast in the film Sucker Punch, a boxing-themed movie not to be confused with the 2011 fantasy action film of the same name.
Antonio Fargas's “Huggy Bear” persona became a cultural touchstone. The Argentine rock band Babasónicos paid tribute to him in their 1998 song “Antonio Fargas,” which includes the Spanish lyric “Antonio Fargas es Huggy Bear.” Another memorable part of his legacy comes from the cult comedy I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, where his character’s exaggerated “fish shoes” became an instantly recognizable comedic image in pop culture.
