April Ryan is a prominent American journalist and author, best known for her role as a White House correspondent and as a political analyst for CNN.
April Danielle Ryan was born on September 5, 1967, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Robert C. Ryan, Sr. and Vivian Ryan. She attended Morgan State University, also located in Baltimore, where she earned her bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism in 1989. During her college years, she gained early experience in the field by working at the university's radio station, WEAA-FM.
Following graduation, Ryan worked as a freelance reporter for various television outlets across the eastern United States. In 1991, she returned to the Baltimore area to take a position as a radio news commentator at V-103, where she was eventually promoted to news director. She also began freelancing for American Urban Radio Networks (AURN), a partnership that marked a turning point in her career.
In 1997, Ryan formally joined AURN as a White House correspondent, becoming one of the few African American women to cover urban issues from the White House. Since then, she has reported on five U.S. presidential administrations. Her role has involved conducting high-profile one-on-one interviews with notable figures such as Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Vice President Al Gore, as well as international leaders like South African President Thabo Mbeki and U.S. diplomatic figures including Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush, and John Kerry.
In addition to her journalism career, April Ryan is a published author. Her first book, The Presidency in Black and White: My Up-Close View of Three Presidents and Race in America, released in 2015, earned her the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Debut Author. She has since continued writing and speaking extensively on topics related to race, politics, and the media.
In 2011, Ryan was elected to the board of the White House Correspondents’ Association, further cementing her influence in national political journalism.
In August 2019, April Ryan was at the center of a publicized incident involving her bodyguard, Joel Morris. During a speaking event in New Jersey, journalist Charlie Kratovil of New Brunswick Today alleged that Morris physically removed him and seized his camera equipment without cause. Kratovil said he had received proper clearance to attend and record the event. The incident drew media attention, prompting discussions about press freedom and security protocols at public events. Ryan later stated she was unaware of the altercation at the time it occurred.
April Ryan is married to Tennie James and resides in Maryland with their two daughters, Ryan and Grace. Despite her demanding career, she prioritizes spending time with her children. As a high-profile journalist, Ryan has faced challenges, including reported death threats after posing questions about then-President Donald Trump’s potential resignation—questions that were publicly criticized by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
In addition to her work with AURN, April Ryan serves as a political analyst for CNN, where she provides expert commentary on current political developments. Her perspective as a longtime White House correspondent and African American journalist has brought unique insights to national discussions involving race, democracy, and governance in the United States.
