Ashley Purdy, an American musician and fashion designer, was born on January 28, 1984, in Berger, Missouri. Although his first name is considered gender-neutral, Ashley Purdy is male. After losing his parents at a young age, he was raised by his grandparents.
During his childhood, Purdy described himself as a "cool kid" who was never bullied. He attributed his popularity to being different, noting that his artistic talent, athletic ability, and trendsetting personality made him stand out. From a young age, he introduced his peers to new music, fashion styles, and cultural trends.
He attended a local high school before moving to San Francisco to study at the Academy of Art. He later transferred to Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Communication Design, with an emphasis on Marketing and Advertising. Throughout college, most of his academic projects and theses focused on fashion and advertising.
Purdy originally moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18 to pursue a career in graphic design. However, he had always been musically inclined and gradually immersed himself in the local music scene, playing with several smaller bands before transitioning to a professional music career.
He became widely known as the bassist and backing vocalist for the rock band Black Veil Brides. He joined the band in 2009 after responding to a Craigslist ad posted by frontman Andy Biersack, initially with the intention of recruiting talented members for his own project. However, the musical chemistry and shared vision convinced him to stay. The band released their debut album, We Stitch These Wounds, on July 20, 2010. The album sold over 10,000 copies in its first week and reached No. 36 on the Billboard 200 chart and No. 1 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart.
In addition to his role in Black Veil Brides, Ashley Purdy has earned recognition as an accomplished metal bassist. He was nominated for the Kerrang! Hottest Male Award and ranked among the 100 Greatest Living Rock Stars in 2011. That same year, the band won the Revolver Golden God Award for Best New Band and the WGRD Listener’s Choice Band of the Year.
Standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing approximately 64 kg, Purdy is known for his distinctive look, featuring blue eyes and brown hair. He briefly dated model Kina Tavarozi during his early career, and although they eventually broke up, they remained on good terms. In 2015, he was linked to adult film actress Nikki Benz, causing widespread speculation on social media. In response to online backlash, Purdy temporarily deactivated his accounts, later clarifying that the two were merely friends.
In addition to his music career, Ashley Purdy is a certified graphic designer and entrepreneur. He launched his own lifestyle and clothing brand, Ashley Purdy Fashion Inc., in early 2013. Combining his passions for visual design and personal expression, he personally conceptualizes and crafts each item, from silk-screening to sewing and customization.
Purdy explained in interviews that launching his own fashion line was a long-held dream. Despite a demanding touring schedule, he committed time to establish the brand legally, build his team, and handle business operations. For him, fashion goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about selling a lifestyle and identity that reflect personal values and creativity.
Reflecting on his roots in fashion, Purdy shared that as a child he would sketch fictional rock band characters, each with their own distinct style. Over time, this evolved into real-world design projects, including school t-shirts, fundraiser materials, and football uniforms. His fashion design process typically begins with an idea, followed by sketches, exploration of fabrics and color palettes, and then sourcing affordable materials to set retail pricing post-production.
According to Ashley Purdy, the keys to success are time management, creativity, and organization. He considers himself a proactive individual who thrives when constantly engaged in artistic or business projects. He firmly believes that if someone wants to achieve a goal—whether in music, design, or another pursuit—they must make the time and commit fully.
