Barack Obama is best known as the 44th President of the United States and for being the first African American to hold the office.
Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His parents, Barack Obama Sr. from Kenya and Ann Dunham from Kansas, separated shortly after his birth and divorced two years later. In 1965, Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian student at the University of Hawaii. The following year, the family moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, where Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, was born in 1970.
Worried about the quality of education and safety in Jakarta, Dunham sent a ten-year-old Obama back to Hawaii, where he lived with his maternal grandparents. He later attended the prestigious Punahou School, excelling in both academics and basketball. As one of the few Black students at the school, Obama developed an early awareness of racial identity and social equity. He graduated in 1979.
Obama began his undergraduate studies at Occidental College in Los Angeles. After two years, he transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he earned a degree in political science in 1983. He later attended Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1991. At Harvard, he made history by becoming the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review.
Following his graduation from Columbia, Obama worked in the private sector for several years. In 1985, he moved to Chicago, where he worked as a community organizer on the South Side, focusing on improving living conditions for low-income residents in neighborhoods like Roseland and Altgeld Gardens. This experience laid the foundation for his future in politics and public service.
Obama entered politics in 1996 when he was elected to the Illinois State Senate. His political reputation grew rapidly, and in 2004, he was elected to the U.S. Senate representing Illinois. That same year, he gained national attention after delivering the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.
In 2008, Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States, making history as the first African American to hold the office. He was re-elected for a second term in 2012. During his presidency, Obama focused on major legislative initiatives such as the Affordable Care Act (commonly known as Obamacare), the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform, and the economic stimulus following the Great Recession. His administration also oversaw the operation that led to the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011.
Obama’s foreign policy leadership included the Paris Agreement on climate change and restoring diplomatic relations with Cuba. One of the more debated narratives post-presidency involves criticisms and internal disagreements during international decision-making processes; for instance, in the book The Education of an Idealist by Samantha Power, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, she recounts differing views within the administration. However, claims that his decisions directly influenced Russia’s failure to secure a Human Rights Council seat in 2016 are speculative and not conclusively substantiated.
During a summer associateship at the law firm Sidley Austin in Chicago, Obama met Michelle Robinson, a young lawyer assigned as his advisor. The two started dating shortly thereafter and were married on October 3, 1992. They settled in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago’s South Side.
The couple has two daughters. Malia Ann Obama was born in 1998, followed by Natasha Marian “Sasha” Obama in 2001. Throughout Obama’s political career, his family remained a central and grounding force in his life, often noted for their grace and poise under the public spotlight.
After leaving office in 2017, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama signed a joint book deal and launched Higher Ground Productions to produce content for Netflix. These ventures, along with public speaking engagements and memoir sales, have contributed to an estimated net worth that exceeds $70 million, according to reputable sources as of 2024. Obama continues to influence public discourse through the Obama Foundation and remains active on issues like democratic participation, climate policy, and leadership development.
