Barry Lamar Bonds was born on July 24, 1964, in Riverside, California, to Bobby and Patricia Bonds (née Howard). He was raised in San Carlos, California. His father, Bobby Bonds, was also a Major League Baseball player. Barry attended Junípero Serra High School in San Mateo, California.
From an early age, Bonds demonstrated a keen interest in sports, including baseball, basketball, and football. He played baseball in high school, joining the junior varsity team during his freshman year. Following high school, he enrolled at Arizona State University, where he excelled on the baseball team and was named ASU On Deck Circle Most Valuable Player.
In the 1985 Major League Baseball Draft, Bonds was selected sixth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He began his professional career with the Prince William Pirates of the Carolina League. He made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in May 1986 and played with the team through 1992.
In 1993, Bonds became a free agent and signed a six-year contract with the San Francisco Giants, marking the beginning of one of the most productive eras in his career. His time with the Giants solidified his legacy, and he was often cited as one of the best players of the 1990s. Bonds continued to play for the Giants until the end of the 2007 season. That year marked the conclusion of his professional playing career, after which he became a free agent.
In 2007, Bonds was indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice in relation to the BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative) steroid scandal. However, all perjury charges were later dropped. His professional reputation took a hit during this period, and he did not return to play in the MLB during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Though he expressed that he did not consider himself retired, Bonds eventually transitioned into coaching roles. In 2014, he joined the San Francisco Giants as a Spring Training instructor on a short-term basis. In 2016, he was hired as the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins.
Bonds' career statistics and achievements reflect a highly successful tenure in Major League Baseball. According to FanGraphs and other statistical sources, he was a dominant force at the plate and in the field. He was named a Baseball America All-Star seven times and received the Silver Slugger Award and Rawlings Gold Glove Award multiple times. He was also honored as Major League Player of the Year three times.
Bonds was first married to Susann Margreth Branco in 1988, after meeting her in Canada in 1987. The couple had two children, a son named Nikolai and a daughter named Shikari. They divorced in 1994, and Bonds reportedly provided $30,000 per month in child and spousal support following the separation. He was later involved in a relationship with Kimberly Bell.
In 1998, Bonds married Liz Watson, and they had a daughter named Aisha. The couple legally separated in 2009. Bonds is estimated to have a net worth of approximately $80 million. He maintains a presence on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
