Barry Lamar Bonds was born on July 24, 1964, in Riverside, California, to Bobby and Patricia Bonds (née Howard). He was raised in San Carlos, California. His father, Bobby Bonds, was also a Major League Baseball player. Barry attended Junípero Serra High School in San Mateo, California.
From an early age, Bonds demonstrated a keen interest in sports, including baseball, basketball, and football. He played baseball in high school, joining the junior varsity team during his freshman year. Following high school, he enrolled at Arizona State University, where he excelled on the baseball team and was named ASU On Deck Circle Most Valuable Player.
In the 1985 Major League Baseball Draft, Bonds was selected sixth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He began his professional career with the Prince William Pirates of the Carolina League. He made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in May 1986 and played with the team through 1992.
In 1993, Bonds became a free agent and signed a six-year contract with the San Francisco Giants, marking the beginning of one of the most productive eras in his career. His time with the Giants solidified his legacy, and he was often cited as one of the best players of the 1990s. Bonds continued to play for the Giants until the end of the 2007 season. That year marked the conclusion of his professional playing career, after which he became a free agent.
