Since his early childhood, he has been interested in different sports like baseball, basketball and football. He played baseball during his freshman year with the junior varsity team and in the school times. After school, he attended the Arizona State University. During his college career, he was chosen as ASU On Deck Circle Most Valuable Player.

During the minor league he was drafted as the 6th overall pick of the 1985 Major League draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.Afterwards, he joined the Prince William Pirates of the Carolina League. Next year he signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates team and made his debut in May. He played there until 1992.

In the 1993 he decided to leave The Pirates team for another place in the San Francisco Giants. Being a lucrative free agent, he signed new contract with Giants for six years. It was his breakthrough time and he even was titled as the best player of the 1990s. The 2007 was the last year of his professional career as a fielder. Giants finalized a contract with him and he became a free agent.

In the 2007 he also was indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction in the case of BALCO, but later all perjury charges against him were dropped. During the 2008-2009 his career has taken a bit of a nosedive. Afterwards, he said that he don’t want be retired and later tried himself as a coach. In the 2014 he began a seven-day stint, working as a roving Spring training instructor for his previous team the Giants. In the 2016 he was announced as a coach for the Miami Marlins team.

According to the fangraphs, he has an impressive stats and his career in general was a very successful. He was titled with the Baseball America All-Star for a seven times. He also reached Silver Slugger Award and Rawlings Gold Glove Award. He was named as the Major League Player of the Year for a three times.

Barry was married twice. He met his first wife, Susann Margreth Branco in the 1987 in Canada. The couple tied their marriage knot the next year. They have two children together, one son named Nikolai and one daughter Shikari. They got to divorce in the 1994, and Barry provided to his ex-wife 30 thousand dollars per month as a support. Afterwards he had some relationship with Kimberly Bell.
