Bryant Charles Gumbel, born September 29, 1948 in New Orleans, is an American TV journalist and also a sportscaster. He is well known for his show, ‘The Today Show’ on NBC but his CV is enriched with some other honorable positions as well such as HBO's acclaimed investigative series ‘Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel’ and ‘GrandStand’ with Jack Buck. The first one even won a Peabody Award in 2012.
Gumbel’s parents were Rhea Alice and Richard Dunbar Gumbel. The latter was a judge while his mother served as a city clerk. Growing up on the South Side of the city, Bryant graduated from De La Salle Institute in Chicago and then got his Russian history degree from Bates College, in 1970.
His first job was in 1971 when he became the editor of Black Sports Magazine. However, he left the following year, signalling the beginning of his television career. More specifically, in October 1972 he was hired as a sports caster for KNBC-TV. A few years later, in 1975 was hired by NBC Sports as co-host of its National Football League pre-game show mentioned above (GrandStand). For about 7 years he kept rising in success, salary and of course fame, hosting numerous sporting events for the network such as the Major League Baseball and the National Football League.
In 1982, Gumbel left NBC Sports to become a member of the Today show and serve as the program's chief sports reporter. His first duty was to contribute features to the program twice a week. After 15 successful years on The Today Show, he went to CBS to host the ‘Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel’ show. Other successful works followed suit over the years including ‘The Early Show’, HBO’s ‘Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel’ and commentary contribution on the NFL games.
What most people don’t know about the renowned sports caster, is that he has made two cameo appearances on movies; the first movie was ‘The Weather Man’ and the second one was ‘Seinfeld’.
Bryant has two kids with his first wife, June who he married in 1973. Their names are Bradley Christopher (born 1978) and Jillian (born 1984). The couple divorced in 2001, when Gumbel wanted to get married to his girlfriend, model and former Goldman Sachs analyst Hilary Quinlan. He, then, married Hilary in 2002 but the two of them have had no kids.

It was said at the time, that the divorce costed him half of his fortune. June got the marital house, nearly ten million dollars and yet, Bryant was seen happy in the court and he said she got the cash and he got his life back. There are two different rumors concerning the reason of separation. The first rumor, as mentioned above, is that he wanted to start a life with Hilary while according to the second rumor, June found that her husband was a serial adulterer. In any case his love affair with Hilary was what blew up his marriage essentially.
But rumors around his marital life and its ending did not stop there. He was said to claim the house on the grounds that he wanted to stay near his golf course along with his then girlfriend, Hilary. He also said that it was his house and he could not imagine June living in it. He even refused to pay his son’s bill not to mention that he never looked at June during the whole court session, according to the reports of June’s brother.
What’s more interesting – and spicy for that matter – is that according to some other reports, the famous journalist and sportscaster cheated on his first wife approximately 50 times, which gave June the right to claim not only his house, but also half of his legal assets and an additional 1.5 million dollars per year. Bryant however, did not want to part with his cash and so he said that he would just pay her $250 per month till he was proved to be an adulterer. It was said that after the separation, he bought himself, a 10-million-dollar house, but, did not even bother to send his children Christmas presents. For four years, he just paid them, $250 per month and June had to use her savings for the legal proceeding and also to take care of the children. His daughter worked as a nanny, to make ends meet. He never commented on why he was not there for his children. Soon after his separation, Gumbel married his longtime girlfriend in a private ceremony of just 25 people. His daughter and son and a few of his friends were seen in the ceremony.
He did not comment on any of the separation settlements. The trail went for nearly four years and he never commented on it, a single day. June’s brother once said that he was a bad excuse for a human. Bryant did not comment on that either. Rumor has it that that the seemingly womanizer moved in with Hilary before even June filed for the separation. He started living together with Hilary when he was in a relationship with June. He was also said to have a lot of mistresses and cheated on June, for most of her marital life and she could not bear the fact that he moved in with another woman. Thus, she filed for a separation. June described Hilary as a leggy blonde.
A more personal and interesting aspect of Gumbel’s personal life is his struggle with lung cancer. More specifically, the successful sportscaster underwent a painful surgery in November 2009 in order to remove to remove a malignant tumor from his chest.
