Chester Charles Bennington was the awesome lead vocalist of the world famous rock band Linkin Park. His vocals on Linkin Park’s music albums have mesmerized rock enthusiasts for more than a decade. He was also associated with the bands Stone Temple Pilots (2013-2015) and Dead By Sunrise. Bennington also made appearances in movies like ""Saw VI" and "Crank: High Voltage". He had a home in Arizona, where he lived with his family when not on musical tours.
He was a drug addict, having been addicted to both cocaine and methamphetamine for a long time. He died on July 20, 2017, in Palos Verdes Estates, California, by hanging himself. He was 41 years old. Early Years Bennington was born on March 20, 1976 in Phoenix, Arizona. His parents both worked long hours outside of the home. His father was a policeman who often worked double shifts, and his mother was a nurse. He has gone on record and said in various interviews that a close family friend had sexually abused him as a child. He was also bullied while attending high school, because he was skinny and looked different than his peers. Bennington’s parent divorced when he was 11 years old, and he went to live with his father. This was when he started abusing a number of drugs, including marijuana, alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
At 17, he moved in with his mother, who restricted him from going out because of his drug use. He worked at Burger King before become a musician. He first became interested in music during his younger years. He said music helped him heal from the hurtful experiences and abuses he had endured. Music Bennington started his career in a band called Sean Dowdell and His Friends around 1993. From there, he and Sean formed a new band called Grey Daze. The band released three albums during the years 1993-1997. Bennington left the band in 1998.
He floated around for a while, unable to find a band until he auditioned for Xero, which would later become Linkin Park. Linkin Park released their first album, Hybrid Theory, in 2000. Bennington was the lead vocalist, but sometimes shared the role with another band member, Mike Shinoda, whom he also wrote songs with. The album was a huge hit, earning Diamond and multi-Platinum status in certain countries. They continued to have great success over the years, selling over 70 million records worldwide, and winning two Grammy Awards. They were named the greatest artists of the 2000’s by a VH1 poll, and ranked #19 on a Billboard magazine’s Best Artists of the Decade list. He had been married twice. His first wife was Samantha Marie Olit, whom he married in 1996. They had a child together, Draven Sebastian, in April 2002. They split when he was jamming with Linkin Park. They divorced in 2005. It is not known if he was an abusive husband. He was very poor when he was married to Samantha; they were to poor to even buy a wedding ring. He was working at Burger King when he met her. Bennington’s second wife was Talinda Bentley, a former playboy model. They met through his best friend, Ryan. They married in 2006, and had three children together. Their first child, Tyler Lee, was born in 2006, and the twins Lilly and Lila were born in 2011. Talinda is an animal lover. They have horses, fish, and dogs at their home in Arizona. They were still married at the time of Bennington’s death. Bennington was not rumored as being violent or abusive, in spite of being brought up in an abusive environment. He must have been a caring boyfriend and husband. Bennington faced lot of emotional issues, given the struggles and disturbances he had to face during his life. Still, he seems to have been a very loving partner after marrying Talinda. They seemed to have had a very harmonious marriage.
Bennington was a tattoo aficionado, having had a total of 14 tattoos on his body. He had also designed tattoos for his wife, Talinda. He worked with and promoted a tattoo parlor in Arizona owned by his friend and former band mate, Sean Dowdell. He enjoyed being a sports fan, cheering for the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals, and Arizona Diamondbacks. He was also an advocate for non-violent free speech. It is unclear whether or not Bennington ever really stopped abusing substances. There are reports that he was able to beat his addiction to drugs, and he even denounced drug use during interviews. However, he continued to drink and may have been lured back to using drugs prior to his death. Whether or not this is true is unknown at this time. Bennington had suffered from bad health off and on for a long time. He suffered many illnesses and injuries during his musical tours and commitments. In 2003, he suffered major abdominal pain while in Prague filming a music video, requiring him to return to the U.S. to undergo surgery. He broke his wrist while touring in 2007.
In 2011, Bennington’s illness forced Linkin Park to cancel three performances. He then injured his shoulder, forcing the band to cancel their final show of that same tour. In 2015, Bennington hurt his ankle while playing basketball. This injury hindered another tour, forcing the band to once again cancel shows so that Bennington could have surgery and heal. It appears that Bennington died via suicide by hanging. His body was discovered early in the morning by his housekeeper. He was at his California home, in Palos Verdes Estates, at the time. He died on the day that his close friend, Chris Cornell, would have turned 53 years old. Bennington had sung at Cornell’s funeral just two months prior to his own death. Cornell also committed suicide by hanging himself, so there is some speculation that Cornell’s death may have contributed to Bennington taking his own life in a similar manner.
