China Anne McClain was born on August 25, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia. She has two older sisters, Sierra and Lauryn McClain. All three sisters began taking dance and acting classes from a young age and have pursued careers in the performing arts, a passion influenced by their artistic family background. Their father, Michael McClain, is a music producer, while their mother, Shontell McClain, is a songwriter.
China McClain’s career began in 2005 when a music executive noticed her talent and recommended her for a role in the film The Gospel. She was cast as Alexis, marking her film debut. In 2006, she appeared in Tyler Perry’s film Madea’s Family Reunion as the character Tamara. Her performance caught the attention of Tyler Perry himself, who later cast her in the television series Tyler Perry's House of Payne, where she portrayed Jazmine Payne from 2007 to 2012.
During this period, McClain also gained additional exposure through roles in various films and television shows. These included A Dennis the Menace Christmas (2007), Daddy’s Little Girls (2007), and guest appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2008) and Hannah Montana (2009). She also appeared in the short film Six Blocks Wide and voiced the character Janet in the animated special Jack and Janet Save the Planet.
McClain’s breakthrough came in 2011 when she starred as Chyna Parks in the Disney Channel series A.N.T. Farm, which ran until 2014. That same year, she also made appearances in Wizards of Waverly Place. On October 11, 2011, she released the A.N.T. Farm soundtrack, featuring her successful single “Calling All the Monsters,” which reached No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another track, her cover of “Dynamite,” charted at No. 29 on the Billboard 200.
As part of the musical group McClain—alongside her sisters—China released Disney-themed compilations, including contributions to the Disney Channel Holiday Playlist in 2012. The group also participated in the Shake It Up: I Love Dance album, which featured a variety of Disney Channel artists.
In 2012, McClain voiced the character Tisha McStuffins in the animated series Doc McStuffins. She appeared in Grown Ups 2 (2013), reprising her role as Charlotte McKenzie. In the following years, she expanded her portfolio with roles in shows and TV films such as Sing Your Face Off (2014), R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, and How to Build a Better Boy. In 2015, she appeared in episodes of Bones and the animated Netflix series VeggieTales in the House. That same year, she voiced the character Freddie in the animated series Descendants: Wicked World.
In 2016, she continued her voice acting as Bilal in the animated film Bilal: A New Breed of Hero and portrayed Lyra in Sheep and Wolves, as well as Lauren in the NBC drama The Night Shift.
Despite beginning her career at a young age, China Anne McClain has remained a prolific actress and musician. She identifies herself as a devoted Christian. Although her family’s demanding schedules sometimes prevent regular attendance at religious services, faith remains an important aspect of her life.
With anticipation building among fans for her role as Uma in the upcoming film Descendants 2—set for release in 2017—McClain continues to demonstrate her talents in both acting and music. Her diverse projects reflect her growth as an entertainer and her ongoing appeal to audiences of all ages.
