Clare Duffy – NBC Nightly News Producer
Clare Duffy, an accomplished television journalist, comes from a distinguished lineage of performers. Her mother, Alice Duffy, is an actress who made her Broadway debut at the age of 81 while Clare was in Vancouver covering the 2010 Olympic Games. Clare’s upbringing was shaped by a rich family tradition in the performing arts, with relatives who graced both stage and screen.
Among her notable relations is the late actor Peter Boyle, best known for roles in "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Young Frankenstein," who was Clare’s uncle on her mother’s side. Clare's mother paused her acting career to raise her three children, later returning to the stage once they were grown. Clare has often spoken about the inspiration she drew from her mother’s reinvention, emphasizing the belief that “it is never too late to do what you want in life.”
Clare had two siblings, including a sister who sadly passed away from cancer in 2009.
Clare Duffy pursued a college education with a focus on journalism, laying the groundwork for her future career in broadcast news. Her academic training equipped her with the skills and insight necessary to thrive in the fast-paced world of television journalism, and she quickly put that knowledge to work after graduation.
Clare Duffy is a producer for NBC Nightly News and has contributed to the program’s success in winning numerous industry accolades. As part of the production team, Clare shared in one of the eight Headliner Awards presented to NBC News. A second-place award in the Health and Science Reporting category was given for the "Early Warning" segment that aired on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. The story was reported by correspondent Mike Taibbi and focused on early detection measures for medical conditions.
Clare vividly recalls where she was on the morning of September 11, 2001. She was returning to NBC’s headquarters at Rockefeller Center via bus, following a morning meeting. As the bus traveled down Fifth Avenue, a fellow passenger announced that a plane had struck one of the Twin Towers. Bewildered and anxious, Clare joined other commuters in stunned silence as they glimpsed smoke rising from lower Manhattan. She remembers the moment as the beginning of a profound shift—personally and professionally. Upon exiting the bus, she ran toward her office to begin coverage of the unfolding tragedy. A stranger called after her, telling her to “take care”—an act of kindness that has stayed with her since.
In January 2010, Clare Duffy traveled to Vancouver to cover the Winter Olympic Games. Around the same time, she was caught in a security disruption at Newark Liberty International Airport that led to widespread delays and confusion. Following a security breach, thousands of passengers, including Clare, were required to undergo secondary screenings. Although the exact cause of the breach was unclear, it resulted in multiple flight delays and heightened traveler frustration. Clare recalled the experience as chaotic, noting the lack of communication from airport authorities during the incident.
