Danny John-Jules is an English actor, singer, and dancer, born on September 16, 1960, in Paddington, London, United Kingdom. His parents are of Dominican descent. He grew up in Notting Hill and attended Rutherford Comprehensive School, where he developed a passion for gymnastics, continuing until his graduation in 1977. He also has a brother who works as a barrister.
John-Jules began his entertainment career as a dancer with the group Second Generation. He performed in numerous productions across London's West End and appeared in the music video for Wham!’s 1986 hit “The Edge of Heaven.” His background in dance and performance helped establish a strong foundation for his later success as an actor.
John-Jules made his initial foray into acting with a role as an unnamed inmate in Roy Minton’s television adaptation of "Scum." However, his breakthrough came in 1988 when he was cast in the British science fiction comedy series "Red Dwarf." He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the flamboyant and stylish character known simply as Cat, a role he has continued to play throughout the show's many seasons and revivals.
In addition to "Red Dwarf," Danny John-Jules appeared in several children’s television series. He played Barrington, the laid-back and musical member of the gang, in the popular CBBC show "Maid Marian and Her Merry Men." He later took on a starring role in the children’s spy series "M.I. High," portraying Lenny Bicknall, the school caretaker and covert MI9 agent who guided a group of teenage spies.
In 2018, John-Jules participated in the 16th series of the BBC’s dance competition "Strictly Come Dancing," partnered with professional dancer Amy Dowden. His performance on the show highlighted his strong background in dance and stage performance, although his run on the show ended midway through the competition.
Danny John-Jules is married to Petula Langlais. Together, they have two daughters, Dante and Danae Langlais-John-Jules. Both daughters have occasionally shared the screen with their father in minor acting roles, continuing the family’s involvement in the performing arts.
