Eva Mendes was born in Miami, Florida, to Cuban parents Juan Carlos Méndez and Eva Pérez Suárez. After her parents divorced, she was raised by her mother in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale. Mendes was brought up in the Roman Catholic faith and, at one time, even considered becoming a Catholic nun. Her mother worked at Mann’s Chinese Theatre and later for an aerospace company, while her father operated a meat distribution business.
Mendes attended Hoover High School in Glendale and later enrolled at California State University, Northridge, to study marketing. However, she left college to pursue acting and began training under acting coach Ivana Chubbuck.
Mendes began her acting career after a talent manager saw her photo in a friend's portfolio. Her first film appearance was in the direct-to-video horror sequel Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror. Dissatisfied with her performance, she hired an acting coach to improve her skills. She soon appeared in supporting roles in films including A Night at the Roxbury, Mortal Kombat: Conquest, My Brother the Pig, The Disciples, Urban Legends: Final Cut, and Exit Wounds.
Her breakthrough role came in 2001 with the crime thriller Training Day. This led to prominent roles in All About the Benjamins, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Once Upon a Time in Mexico—which earned her a Teen Choice Award nomination—Out of Time, and Stuck on You. In 2005, Mendes played the female lead in the romantic comedy Hitch, becoming one of the first Latina actresses to star in a high-grossing romantic comedy. She continued her career with roles in The Wendell Baker Story, Guilty Hearts, Trust the Man, Ghost Rider, We Own the Night, Live!, and Cleaner.
Mendes appeared in several music videos throughout her career, including Will Smith’s “Miami,” the Pet Shop Boys’ “Se a vida é (That’s the Way Life Is)” in 1996, Aerosmith’s “Hole in My Soul” in 1997, and The Strokes’ 2004 video for “The End Has No End.”
She was signed as a global ambassador for Revlon Cosmetics and participated in their campaign to raise funds for breast cancer research. Mendes also modeled for Calvin Klein's Secret Obsession perfume campaign, which featured a nude advertisement that was banned in the United States. In December 2007, she appeared in a PETA anti-fur campaign using a nude photograph. Mendes modeled for Morgan and became a spokesmodel for the 2008 Campari calendar. In 2008, she was announced as the international face of Australia's 30 Days of Fashion & Beauty event and made guest appearances at the festival that September. She has also been featured in campaigns for Calvin Klein, Magnum, Cocio chocolate milk, Thierry Mugler’s Angel fragrance, Reebok, Pantene shampoo, and was included in a 2011 Peek & Cloppenburg clothing catalog.
From 2002 to 2010, Mendes was in a relationship with producer George Augusto. In 2011, she began dating her co-star from The Place Beyond the Pines, Ryan Gosling, who is now her husband. The couple has two daughters: Esmeralda Amada, born on September 12, 2014, and Amada Lee, born on April 29, 2016.
Mendes follows a vegetarian lifestyle for both ethical and health reasons. She also practices Transcendental Meditation to support her mental well-being.
Though Mendes was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress in 2008 for her performance in The Women, she continued to take on challenging roles. She appeared in The Spirit, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, The Other Guys, Last Night, Fast Five, and a Funny or Die spoof video. In 2012, she traveled to Sierra Leone and was featured in the PBS documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.
In 2013, she starred in The Place Beyond the Pines, where her performance received critical acclaim. Entertainment Weekly described her acting in the film as "quietly heartbreaking," highlighting her continued evolution as a serious actress.
