Gaspard Ulliel, a renowned French actor, was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris. He is the son of Christine Ulliel, a television show producer, and Serge Ulliel, a stylist. A distinctive scar on his left cheek, obtained during childhood, has become one of his recognizable features. He received the scar at the age of six while playing with the family dog. Attempting to ride the dog like a horse, he was accidentally scratched, leaving a mark that, over the years, he came to embrace. Ulliel once noted that the scar contributes to the depth of his facial expressions, enhancing his emotional presence on screen.
Ulliel studied cinema at the University of Saint-Denis and began his acting career while still in school. His first role was in a French television film, Une Femme en Blanc. While participating in workshops at Cours Florent, a prestigious acting school in Paris, his talent caught the attention of director André Téchiné, which helped launch his professional journey.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ulliel appeared in various television films, gradually establishing his name in the French film industry. His transition to international cinema came with his English-language debut in Hannibal Rising (2007), where he played the title role of a young Hannibal Lecter. Although the film received mixed reviews, it was commercially successful and introduced Ulliel to a global audience.
One of his most acclaimed performances came in 2004 with Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s A Very Long Engagement. Ulliel's portrayal of Manech earned him the César Award for Most Promising Actor, significantly boosting his reputation in French cinema.
In addition to his film work, Gaspard Ulliel cultivated a prolific modeling career. In 2007, he was featured in Vogue magazine, and in 2010, he became the face of Bleu de Chanel, a fragrance campaign directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese. His association with major luxury brands continued as he modeled for Longchamp, a well-known French company specializing in leather and luxury goods.
Ulliel’s portrayal of fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent in Bertrand Bonello’s 2014 biographical film Saint Laurent was widely praised. For this role, he won the Lumières Award for Best Actor and received a nomination for the César Award for Best Actor. This performance further solidified his standing as one of France’s most accomplished and versatile actors.
Ulliel continued to be active in both French and international cinema. In 2016, he appeared in Xavier Dolan’s It's Only the End of the World, co-starring Marion Cotillard and Vincent Cassel. That same year, he starred in The Dancer, a tribute to Loie Fuller, and in Les Confins du Monde, directed by Guillaume Nicloux. These performances highlighted his range as an actor and contributed to his continued success in the industry.
Since 2013, Gaspard Ulliel had been in a relationship with French model and singer Gaëlle Piétri. The couple’s chemistry was well-received by fans and media alike, often cited as one of France’s most admired celebrity pairs. They had one child together, born in 2016.
