Isabelle Fuhrman, born on February 25, 1997, in Washington, D.C., is an American actress best known for her roles in psychological horror and young adult franchises. She was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Her mother, Elina Fuhrman, a journalist of Russian descent, previously worked for CNN, while her father is a corporate business consultant. Isabelle currently resides with her family in Los Angeles, California.
Fuhrman began her acting career at the age of seven, when she was discovered by a casting director from Cartoon Network. Her first on-screen appearance was in the network’s series “Cartoon Fridays.” She made her feature film debut in 2007 with a role in "Hounddog." However, it was her chilling portrayal of Esther in the 2009 horror film Orphan, alongside Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga, that brought her international recognition.
Following the success of Orphan, Fuhrman continued to develop her on-screen presence. She played the role of Gretchen Dennis in an episode of the television series Ghost Whisperer opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt. In 2006, she appeared as Grace O’Neil in the unsold pilot of Justice. Her television appearances also included comedic segments on The Tonight Show. Additionally, Fuhrman has appeared in several national television commercials for brands such as K-Mart and Pizza Hut.
In the 2012 film adaptation of The Hunger Games, Fuhrman was initially considered for the role of Katniss Everdeen but was ultimately deemed too young at 14 years old. She was later recalled and successfully cast as Clove, one of the tributes from District 2. Her intense performance in the role was well-received and further solidified her position in Hollywood.
Fuhrman’s work in Ghost Whisperer earned her a Young Artist Award nomination, highlighting her talent at a young age. She has also been featured in prominent fashion and lifestyle magazines such as Nylon, Teen Vogue, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, V, H, Bust, and Last Magazine, a testament to her growing influence both on and off screen.
Since 2010, Fuhrman has actively supported the nonprofit organization Save the Children. She contributed to their "Caps for Good" campaign by knitting hundreds of baby caps, aiming to reduce infant mortality in developing countries. Her philanthropic efforts extend to her role on the Advisory Board of the Love & Art Children’s Foundation, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit focused on using the arts to uplift underserved youth.
Fuhrman was announced to star in the planned remake of the 1977 horror film Suspiria, which was initially associated with director David Gordon Green. However, the project underwent changes, and it was ultimately directed by Luca Guadagnino and released in 2018 with a different cast. Though Fuhrman did not appear in the final version, her attachment to high-profile projects continues to reflect her recognition in the film industry.
