Jeffrey Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960, at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. He was the first of two sons born to Joyce Annette Dahmer and Lionel Herbert Dahmer. From a young age, Dahmer exhibited unusual interests. Initially fascinated with collecting insects like dragonflies and butterflies in jars, his curiosity eventually turned to collecting and dissecting dead animals, often found near his home. According to family accounts, this morbid interest began as early as age four.
Dahmer attended Revere High School in Bath Township, Ohio, after the family relocated. During his teenage years, he developed a quiet and withdrawn personality and struggled with alcohol abuse, reportedly beginning to drink heavily as early as age 14. Around the time of puberty, Dahmer realized he was homosexual, although he never disclosed this to friends or family. He later admitted that his sexual fantasies became intertwined with violent thoughts, particularly fantasies involving control and submission.
When he was 16, Dahmer attempted his first assault, planning to attack a male jogger with a baseball bat. He waited in hiding but abandoned the plan when the jogger did not appear. This foreshadowed the violent behavior that would later define his life. In June 1978, just three weeks after graduating from high school, Dahmer committed his first murder, taking the life of 18-year-old Steven Hicks.
In January 1979, Dahmer enlisted in the U.S. Army and was trained as a medical specialist. However, his time in the military was short-lived due to ongoing problems with alcohol, and he was honorably discharged in 1981 after approximately two years of service. Years later, Dahmer would be diagnosed with multiple mental health disorders, including borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, and a psychotic disorder.
From 1978 to 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 young men and boys, a series of crimes that included rape, dismemberment, necrophilia, and cannibalism. His victims were predominantly African American and Asian, many of whom he lured to his apartment under false pretenses. Despite early arrests for indecent exposure and sexual assault, the full extent of his crimes went undetected for over a decade.
Dahmer was ultimately convicted of 15 of the 16 murders committed in Wisconsin. On February 15, 1992, he was sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms, totaling 957 years in prison, avoiding the death penalty due to Wisconsin's lack of capital punishment.
Jeffrey Dahmer's life came to a violent end on November 28, 1994, when he was beaten to death by a fellow inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin. He was 34 years old at the time of his death.
