She is the daughter of Toby Gilsig, an engineer, and Claire Gilsig, a writer and translator. Raised in a Jewish household on her father's side, she spent most of her childhood in Montreal.
Gilsig attended the all-girls Trafalgar School for Girls in Montreal before enrolling at McGill University in 1989. She graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor’s degree in English.
