Jodi Applegate, born on May 2, 1964, grew up in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. She began her college education at Temple University in Philadelphia before transferring to New York University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in television and film.
In 2011, Jodi Applegate married Michael Kay, a well-known television broadcaster for the New York Yankees. Their wedding ceremony was officiated by former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. In May 2012, Applegate announced that she was expecting a child via gestational surrogate. Her daughter, Caledonia Rose, was born in 2013.
Before entering the field of journalism, Applegate had a brief acting career. In 1987, she appeared in televised adaptations of children’s books, including A Pocket for Corduroy and There’s a Nightmare in My Closet. She also hosted the public affairs program Close Up on C-SPAN. Applegate later worked as a television and radio traffic reporter for Metro Traffic in San Francisco. She then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to host Good Morning Arizona on KTVK, where she met her first husband, Rob Nikolski. The couple later divorced.
Applegate became one of the original anchors at MSNBC when the network launched in 1996. She anchored several programs, including Weekend Today on NBC and MSNBC Live. She also served as a fill-in anchor for NBC’s Today show. Her role at both national and local NBC television stations established her reputation as a credible journalist and news anchor.
In 2001, Applegate joined WFXT, the Fox affiliate in Boston, where she anchored Fox 25 News. Although the program was canceled shortly afterward, she continued to work at the station, co-anchoring Fox 25 Morning News. In 2004, she transitioned to WNYW, a Fox-owned station in New York City.
Applegate expanded into radio as a fill-in anchor for WCBS in 2009. She also appeared on Living Today, a program on Sirius XM’s Martha Stewart Living Radio. Additionally, she hosted programs on WOR in New York and WRKO in Boston, showcasing her versatility across different media platforms.
In 2008, Applegate made her sole Broadway appearance in the musical Chicago, further highlighting her diverse talents beyond journalism.
In 2012, Applegate announced her departure from WPIX, citing the station’s refusal to reduce her work schedule. Her decision was motivated by a desire to prioritize time with her family, particularly in preparation for the birth of her daughter in early 2013.
