Stockbroker turned news anchor, Joe Kernen is a CNBC employee who joined the company as an in-studio financial reporter in its 1991 merger with the Financial News Network. Kernen is regarded as a veteran news anchor at CNBC. In 2005, Kernen was promoted to the role of CNBC's "Squawk Box" co-host after a significant revamp. Previously, he was an in-studio reporter for a financial market-analysis show in 1995. He is an ex-vice-president for reputed firms such as "EF Hutton" and "Smith Barney."
Before joining the Financial News Network, Kernen had earned valuable experience as a stockbroker for over 10 years. Joe earned the nickname, "The Kahuna" for his direct and audacious commenting techniques. However, such an approach has brought him controversies many times over the years. Sometimes, he gets criticized for being too right-wing. His most famous controversy was the "IFDA head Martin Shanahan interview-Euro controversy" in 2014. In the interview, Kernen didn’t know about the use of EURO in Ireland. However, Shanahan behaved humbly and did not make a big deal about it.
In addition to his on-screen career, he is also known as the author of a book. He has published a book named, "Your Teacher Said What?!: Defending Our Kids from the Liberal Assault on Capitalism." This book came out in 2011 and his then 5th grade daughter, Blake helped him write it. Joe has been married to his longtime girlfriend turned wife since 1998 to Penelope Kernen, a former commodities trader, and ex-CNBC Squawk Box producer. They had a golf themed wedding ceremony on the 18th tee of the Four Seasons Kona Hualalai. The wedding wasn’t performed by a priest, but it was actually performed by a wise Hawaiian man whose words Joe could not understand. The couple has two children together named Blake and Scott.
Joe's wife, Penelope, bought her childhood home when it went up for sale because she couldn't stand the idea of driving past it knowing that someone else was living in it. About refurbishing it, she said, "We made sure we used everything from the house that we could. The leaded windows were all redone, and I found four pairs of original French doors in a closet in the basement and was able to use them in the wet bar gallery. We even used all the original brass doorknobs and hinges.”
Beyond refurbishing the old, the team also added 3,500-square-feet of new living space, including a cabana and a family room, a must for any nice household that includes two teenage children and three dogs. Because of this refurbishment, Joe now has his own man cave.
