Joseph Richard Kernen was born on January 6, 1957, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kernen grew up in the Western Hills section of Cincinnati and graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1974. His father’s name is Joe Blake Kernen. His father was a doctor and his mother was a nurse.

Joseph earned his Masters Degree in Molecular Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kernen also earned a bachelor's degree in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. During his graduate studies, he worked at the MIT Center for Cancer Research, one of the world's most premier and highly regarded institutions. His research work mostly focused on mouse erythroleukemia cells and resulted in a series of publications in many well-known and popular scientific journals including CELL, Developmental Biology, and Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology.

Stockbroker turned news anchor, Joe Kernen is a CNBC employee who joined the company as an in-studio financial reporter in its 1991 merger with the Financial News Network. Kernen is regarded as a veteran news anchor at CNBC. In 2005, Kernen was promoted to the role of CNBC's "Squawk Box" co-host after a significant revamp. Previously, he was an in-studio reporter for a financial market-analysis show in 1995. He is an ex-vice-president for reputed firms such as "EF Hutton" and "Smith Barney."

Before joining the Financial News Network, Kernen had earned valuable experience as a stockbroker for over 10 years. Joe earned the nickname, "The Kahuna" for his direct and audacious commenting techniques. However, such an approach has brought him controversies many times over the years. Sometimes, he gets criticized for being too right-wing. His most famous controversy was the "IFDA head Martin Shanahan interview-Euro controversy" in 2014. In the interview, Kernen didn’t know about the use of EURO in Ireland. However, Shanahan behaved humbly and did not make a big deal about it.

In addition to his on-screen career, he is also known as the author of a book. He has published a book named, "Your Teacher Said What?!: Defending Our Kids from the Liberal Assault on Capitalism." This book came out in 2011 and his then 5th grade daughter, Blake helped him write it. He had some acting roles in the movie Too Big To Fail (2011) and the popular reality TV series, The Apprentice (2004).
