Joel Edward McHale was born in 1971 in Rome, Italy. His father worked as the Dean of Students at Loyola University Rome Center and was originally from Chicago. His mother is from Vancouver, British Columbia. Joel was raised Catholic in the state of Washington, where he attended Mercer Island High School.
He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in History from the University of Washington in 1995 and was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity.
