Joel Edward McHale was born in 1971 in Rome, Italy. His father worked as the Dean of Students at Loyola University Rome Center and was originally from Chicago. His mother is from Vancouver, British Columbia. Joel was raised Catholic in the state of Washington, where he attended Mercer Island High School.
He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in History from the University of Washington in 1995 and was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. While at the university, he was invited to join the rowing team but chose instead to play for the football team as a tight end for two years. He later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Professional Actors Training Program at the University of Washington.
Joel McHale married Sarah Williams in 1996, and the couple has two sons. They currently reside in California. Both Joel and Sarah maintain a low public profile regarding their personal relationships, with no records of previous significant others or divorces.
McHale began his career in comedy performing on the Seattle-based sketch comedy show Almost Live! for KING-TV. He was also a member of the improv comedy group Unexpected Productions at Seattle's Market Theater. After obtaining his MFA, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue further opportunities in acting and television.
His early television appearances included small roles in shows such as Diagnosis: Murder, Will & Grace, and CSI: Miami. He had a cameo as a TV reporter in the biopic Lords of Dogtown, and guest roles in series such as Thank God You're Here and Pushing Daisies. He appeared in Spider-Man 2 as Mr. Jack, a sarcastic bank manager.
