Joel Smollett has no Wikipedia page, but that doesn't stop us from learning some basic things about him.  He was born in 1958. The only publicly distributed information about him concerns his race, ethnicity, and family. He was Jewish and is believed to have moved to the United States from Poland and Russia. He was a cable splicer and he died of cancer in 2015 at the age of 58 years old. He and his wife Janet, an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Americans">African American</a>, had six children together. They had two girls named <a href="/biography/jurnee-smollett">Jurnee</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz">Jazz</a> and four boys named Jussie, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Smollett">Jake</a>, Jocqui and JoJo. All of the children were born in New York exept <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz">Jazz</a> and Jussie, who were born in California.   Joel's obituary is at Eden Memorial Park. We are going to take a look at his children’s achievements, as there is no other information openly available about Joel.

<a href="/biography/jurnee-smollett">Jurnee</a> starred in the popular ABC sitcom On Our Own with all of her siblings for two seasons in 1994 and 1995. She also appeared in many more shows, including House, Martin, True Blood, Friday Night Lights, Cosby, Full House, Hangin' With Mr. Cooper, and Grey’s Anatomy.

In 1996 <a href="/biography/jurnee-smollett">Jurnee</a> got a role in the movie called Jack by the famous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Ford_Coppola">producer</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Ford_Coppola">Francis Coppola</a>. She also performed in Eve’s Bayou when she was just 10 years old, receiving much recognition for her role. In 1999 <a href="/biography/jurnee-smollett">Jurnee</a> starred in Disney’s Selma, Lord, Selma and in 2000 she appeared alongside <a href="/biography/sharon-stone">actress</a> <a href="/biography/sharon-stone">Sharon Stone</a> in Beautiful Joe. She was a successful <a href="/biography/jurnee-smollett">actress</a> by all rights, however the 2013 film Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor didn't do her any justice, as it was a box office flop. .

She's also actively involved in HIV/AIDS charities and in raising awareness for the disease since she was 11 years old.

Jussie Langston Smollet

Jussie, one of Joel's sons, is also an actor, photographer and singer. He began his acting career relatively early in his childhood, appearing in national commercials in New York City at only 4 years old. When he was 9, he appeared in the 1992 movie The Mighty Ducks.  He also starred as the gay <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamal_Lyon">musician</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamal_Lyon">Jamal Lyon</a> in Fox's primetime drama Empire and was praised for the role for portraying a black gay man in a positive light on the show. He played Ricks in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ridley_Scott">Ridley Scott</a>'s sci-fi film Alien: Covenant. His most recent film role was as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langston_Hughes">Langston Hughes</a> in the 2017 movie Marshall.

He recently publicized the fact that he is gay on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_DeGeneres">Ellen Degeneres</a> show in March of 2015.

He's won 4 NAACP Image Awards, including Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration, Outstanding Song, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAACP_Image_Award_for_Outstanding_New_Artist">Outstanding New Artist</a>, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. In 2017, he was nominated for Choice TV Actor Drama in the Teen Choice Awards.

He's also appeared in a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariah_Carey">Mariah Carey</a> music video in 2015 for the song "Infinity".

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Smollett">Jake</a> was born on July 29, 1989. He is also a professional American <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Smollett">actor</a> who began his career as a diaper model in his first years of life. He got his first acting role in the TV series Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper and later starred with his siblings in On Our Own aired by the ABC network. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Smollett">Jake</a> also played a role with his sister <a href="/biography/jurnee-smollett">Jurnee</a>, portraying <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_L._Jackson">Samuel L. Jackson</a>’s son in Eve’s Bayou by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasi_Lemmons">Kasi Lemmons</a>. He also played Noser in The Middleman.

In 2016, he cooked homestyle meals with his five brothers and sisters on "Smollett Eats" on Food Network. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Smollett">Jake</a> has also appeared most recently in 2017 on The Rachael Ray show and on "Chopped Junior".

Jocqui Smollett

Considerably less is known about Joel's son, Jocqui.  He first acting appearrance was in On Our Own (1994).  His next recorded appearance came 15 years later, in 2009, in Amanda's Return and Pitch This. He is listed as the producer of the 2016 Food Network series Smollet Eats.

The only public information available for Jocqui was found on his Facebook profile.  As a student, Jocqui graduated from Calabasas High School and later studied Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is now a Business Intelligence Data Analyst at SurveyMonkey, after being promoted on March 1, 2016, from his position as a Sales Operations Specialist for 7 months.

Nothing is known of his personal life.

Jojo Smollett

Jojo Smollet also had some TV experience. As previously mentioned he appeared in On Our Own. His other appearances were in City of Hope (1991), Last Breeze of Summer (1991), <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roseanne">Roseanne</a> (1991), The Practice (1997), and Moesha (1997).

According to Hollywood.com, Jojo was born on October 1, 1986.

No other credible sources have published any information concerning Jojo's personal life. He is rumored to have attended Pierce College and is possibly currently employed at Ralph, a retail and consumer merchandise company.

Jazz Smollett

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz">Jazz</a> was born on April 1, 1980 according to trustworth sources.  She is an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz">actress</a> and producer, known for her roles in On Our Own, I Want You (2007) and Always with You (2009).  She is the only of the 6 siblings who, aside from acting, served as a producer and production manager on a number of projects, including being listed as an Executive Producer their family's Food Network series Smollet Eats..

According to her Instagram profile, the gorgeous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz">Jazz</a> is married to Troy, a muscular Ford Model Director, Producer and Writer. They have at least 1 daughter, who appears to have an affinity for the camera.

In conslusion, while not much is known about Joel himself, it is safe to say that many of Joel Smollett’s children have left a significant mark in the movie industry. Most of them are successful young actors/actresses who undeniably have great futures ahead of them. Others appear to have been successful in their careers and/or families. Since each generation learns from their elders, we can’t help but conclude that Joel was a capable father who was likely a contributory factor leading to his children’s achievements. For that we thank him.
