John was born on March 26, 1962. He was born in Washington in the United States of America. The name of his father is Jack Stockton and the name of his mother is Clementine Frei. His <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hust_Stockton">grandfather</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hust_Stockton">Hust Stockton</a>, played professional football for the nascent National Football League, for the Frankford Yellow Jackets in the 1920s. He also has three siblings and the name of his two sisters is Stacey Stockton and Leanne Stockton. The name of his brother is Steven Stockton. It is known that his parents had roots in Germany, Switzerland, and Ireland. John completed his schooling Gonzaga Prep and as per the information available, he completed his schooling in 1980. He later went to Gonzaga University to complete his graduation.

John started his career at an early age as he started playing basketball for his elementary school. Later he was a part of the college team where he played several matches for the college basketball team. His average points during his senior years were 20.9. This was in 1984. On top of that, John Stockton was voted as the second most dirty player in the NBA, only behind <a href="/biography/dennis-rodman">Dennis Rodman</a>, according to a poll published by Sports Illustrated in 1997. With his hard nosed defense and amazing work ethic for preparing for games and opposing players, he also had extreme durability which resulted in him hardly ever being injured during his 19 years in the NBA.

John was also known as being one of the most loyal players in the NBA. As a lot of players during this time chased as much money as they could, either by switching teams, or by selling themselves to which ever endorsements offered the most money. John decided he wasn't going to stoop to that level. He avoided most endorsements throughout his career and stayed loyal to his original team that drafted him, the Utah Jazz. Even though most teams offered him more money, he chose to stay loyal to Utah and it's fans.

Johns 19 year career was truly impressive.  In May 2006, ESPN ran an article ranking John Stockton as the 4th best point guard of all time in the NBA. On top of that, in December of 2017, Stockton had held third place as a leader of career games played in the NBA. This position is very impressive because he played in 19 seasons during his career, but only missed 22 games over that entire period. This is the highest percentage of attended games over a career with players who have more than 1000 games played. No one else has ever been that durable in the NBA.
