The youngest of nine children, Karl grew up contributing to household responsibilities from a young age. He attended Summerfield High School, where he was a standout player on the school's basketball team.
Malone initially attended the University of Arkansas but eventually enrolled at Louisiana Tech University after being recruited by then-coach Andy Russo—not Eddie Sutton, as sometimes inaccurately reported.
