Isaiah Thomas was born in 1989 in Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from South Kent School in Connecticut before attending the University of Washington, where he played college basketball from 2008 to 2011. While at Washington, he was a three-time All-Pac-10 Conference selection. He is the son of Tina Baldtrip and James Thomas. His name was inspired by Hall of Fame point guard Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons, following a bet his father made with a friend regarding the Pistons’ performance. His mother chose the biblical spelling "Isaiah" for a more traditional tone.
Thomas declared for the NBA Draft after his junior year at the University of Washington, forgoing his senior season. He was selected by the Sacramento Kings as the 60th and final pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. Despite being chosen last, he quickly made an impact with his agility, scoring ability, and leadership on the court.
In 2014, Thomas joined the Phoenix Suns through a sign-and-trade deal, which allowed the Sacramento Kings to acquire the rights to Alex Oriakhi. Later that same season, he was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Marcus Thornton and a 2016 first-round pick. With the Celtics, Thomas emerged as a leading scorer and became a fan favorite for his performance and grit.
Isaiah Thomas was named an NBA All-Star in both 2016 and 2017, recognizing his standout contributions to the Celtics. Known for his scoring efficiency despite being one of the shorter players in the league, Thomas achieved career-high statistics during this period, including a 2016–2017 season average of 28.9 points per game.
