Josh McDaniels was born April 22, 1976. Josh McDaniels is an assistant coach for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He serves as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.
Early Life
Josh’s father Thom McDaniels was the football coach of an Ohio high school. In 1997, his father was named the high school coach of the year by USA today. His father was the inspiration for him to take up coaching as a future profession. Thom McDaniels was given the moniker "Legend of Ohio high school football" because of his incredible coaching skills. One can understand why young Josh was so inspired by his father.
McDaniels attended Canton McKinley High School and played as a quarterback for the high school team. He joined John Carroll University and also played football there. He could play in many positions but he mainly stuck with his main position as a wide receiver. He played at the University from 1995 to 1998.
Coaching Career Start
McDaniels started his coaching career in 1999 as a graduate assistant for Michigan State University. He was a senior assistant working under Nick Saban. Josh took an advantage of using his father’s friendship with Nick Saban to work under him. He also worked as a plastic sales representative in Cleveland during the time to pay his bills.
McDaniels started his NFL career as a coach in 2001 when he was appointed as the personal assistant for the New England Patriots. For two years, 2002 and 2003, Josh had the position of defensive coaching assistant and he worked with the defensive players helping them improve their game. In 2004, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach. McDaniels was with the team for all of their Super Bowl Championships during his first stint as a Patriot.
In 2008, with the departure of Charlie Weis, McDaniels was promoted to the new offensive coordinator position for the Patriots. But he was still asked to be the coach for the quarterbacks because his talent was also valued there. In 2007, the Patriots set a NFL record for scoring 75 touchdowns in which 67 of the touchdowns were offensive scores. This led to a rumor that McDaniels may leave the Patriots for a job as head coach for another team. Other teams started to recognize his incredible coaching ability and felt that he had the ability to graduate from being an assistant and lead his own team.
Head Coach of the Denver Broncos
On January 11, 2009, McDaniels was hired as the new head coach for the Denver Broncos. He was brought in to replace Mike Shanahan who was the coach for a long time and won a Super Bowl for Denver. Josh got a good deal with the Broncos. He was offered a four year contract for $8 million, which he happily accepted. McDaniel’s tenure as the head coach of the Broncos was stained early on because of a controversy involving the team’s quarterback, Jay Cutler. It was alleged that McDaniels wanted to trade Jay for one of the quarterbacks from his old team, the Patriots. The quarterback he was targeting was Matt Cassel.

At the time of his hiring, he was the youngest head coach in the history of NFL. The record was broken by Raheem Morris in less than a week when he was hired as the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The first season as the head of the Broncos started impressively for McDaniels with six straight wins. They even won an overtime game against his former team, the Patriots in the fifth week. However, their good run ended soon and they later suffered 4 straight losses. They still had a chance to qualify for the playoffs but spoiled the chance by losing to Kansas City 44-24.
In 2010, the Broncos ended their season with 3-9 record. During this season the Broncos had their last match with the Kansas City Chiefs on December 5th which they lost. The loss was the last chance for Josh. It would lead to his firing from the Broncos, a day later.
Cheating Scandal
McDaniels was involved in a videotape scandal during his tenure with the Broncos in 2010. On November 27th, it was reported that apparently Steve Scarnecchia who used to be the Broncos video operations director was hired by McDaniels in 2009 to videotaped a walkthrough practice game of the San Francisco 49ers' at the Wembley stadium, London, England. The same day this was found out, the NFL imposed a 50,000 dollar fine on both the Broncos and on McDaniels. After the incident, Scarnecchia was fired.
When asked by the NFL investigators, Scarnecchia confessed that he was alone in this and even though he knew it was wrong, he still went on with it. He also said that after taping the practice, he offered the six minute video to McDaniels but McDaniels declined to watch it. This led the NFL to come to the conclusion that the Broncos did not have any tactical advantage over the 49ers' during their game.
After a lot of investigation, McDaniels name was cleared up and it was assumed that he was clean and had not seen the recording. But the NFL still imposed a fine on McDaniels stating that he should have come directly to them after being offered the recording and not kept it under wraps. The NFL did not withdraw the fine on Broncos claiming that "clubs are ultimately accountable for the conduct of their employees".
Life After Denver
On January 18, 2011, McDaniels was hired as the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. Head coach Spagnuolo praised McDaniels "I've always recognized that he is one of the top offensive minds in the NFL. We think he is a great addition to our organization." After the 2011 season, Rams fired Spagnuolo and allowed McDaniels to leave for other opportunities. The Patriots once again hired McDaniels as their offensive coordinator. In the 2014 season, McDaniels helped Patriots twin the Super Bowl game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Personal Life
McDaniels met his future wife, Laura while working as the plastic sales representative in Cleveland. They got married in 2002 and have 4 children. Even though Josh is no longer a head coach, he is comfortable with his assistant role with the Patriots because he has so much history with the successful and proud team.
