Kaity Tong is a Chinese-born American Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist born and brought up in Qingdao, China. She is quite popular as an American journalist anchor and has been a news anchor since 1981.
Kaity Tong was born in 1947 in Qingdao, China. Kaity and her entire family left for New York when she was only four years old. Her parents changed their names to George Tong and Anita Tong to sound more "American." Her great-uncle, Hollington K. Tong, was an ambassador to the USA. He was also a famous writer and was the primary inspiration for Kaity to become a news anchor. Her mother was also involved in the same field, which inspired Kaity even more.
Kaity studied at Bryn Mawr College on a full scholarship. She also got into Stanford University for a doctoral program in literature. While looking there, she decided to become a teacher in English literature. However, her luck changed when she started anchoring for a summer program during her stay at Stanford. The jobs consisted of anchoring during the morning show and working as a producer for the KPIX-TV All-News Radio. It was the top news station in San Francisco then.
Although it was only supposed to be a summer job, Kaity stayed there for a much more extended period. She was promoted quickly, where her first live story was a report on the new carts that people would ride around the airport. She shifted towards the news business after completing her master's degree successfully.
Kaity Tong married Robert Long, who was a news director, they had a son together named Philip Long. Their marriage ended in divorce in 2009. After her split, Kaity went on to marry Patrick Callahan.
Kaity Tong is a famous American journalist anchor and has been a news anchor since 1981. She has received many awards during her career due to her exceptional performances as a journalist and anchor, like the Exceptional Achievement Award from The Women's Project, Rotary International, and a Star Award. She has also been awarded the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor for her lifetime of work.
In December 1979, Kaity became a co-anchor of 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts on KCRA-TV in Sacramento. She was moved to the 6 p.m. newscast, sharing the anchor chair with John Johnson and Bill Beutel after Roger Grimsby was fired in 1986 for bad behavior. Eventually, Kaity's only anchor role was the 11 p.m. news, as Bill Beutel became the solo anchor of the 6 p.m. broadcast in 1984.
In early 1992, Kaity joined WPIX as the company's top female anchor, and she has been working there ever since. She is considered to be one of the best anchors the channel ever had. She receives excellent compensation for her work at WPIX, and her estimated net worth is around $4 million.
Kaity was also involved in a 2010 lawsuit by the former director of news Karen Scott against WPIX for age discrimination. The people involved in the lawsuit promptly lost their jobs and then had to testify in court about the situation. Kaity was part of the winning side and continued working at WPIX.
