Kaity Tong was born in 1947 in Qingdao, China. Kaity and her entire family left for New York when she was only four years old. Her parents changed their names to George Tong and Anita Tong to sound more "American." Her great-uncle, Hollington K. Tong, was an ambassador to the USA. He was also a famous writer and was the primary inspiration for Kaity to become a news anchor. Her mother was also involved in the same field, which inspired Kaity even more.
Kaity studied at Bryn Mawr College on a full scholarship. She also got into Stanford University for a doctoral program in literature. While looking there, she decided to become a teacher in English literature. However, her luck changed when she started anchoring for a summer program during her stay at Stanford. The jobs consisted of anchoring during the morning show and working as a producer for the KPIX-TV All-News Radio. It was the top news station in San Francisco then.
