Kari Matchett was born on March 25, 1970, in Spalding, Saskatchewan, a small village in Canada. She completed her high school education at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in Alberta. From a young age, she developed a strong interest in storytelling, particularly after reading S.E. Hinton’s novels, especially The Outsiders. Her passion for acting was sparked when she discovered that the novel would be adapted into a film.
Pursuing her interest in the dramatic arts, Matchett studied at the Moscow Theatre School and later graduated from the National Theatre School in Montreal. She also gained stage experience performing for three consecutive seasons at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, one of Canada's premier classical repertory companies.
Matchett began her television career with a role in the Canadian drama series The Rez. She later gained recognition for her performance as Colleen Blessed in the series Power Play (1998). She received further prominence through the A&E Network series A Nero Wolfe Mystery, where she portrayed various roles, most notably the recurring character Lily Rowan.
In 2002, she appeared as Kate Filmore in the science fiction thriller Cube 2: Hypercube, a sequel to the cult hit Cube. The following year, she starred opposite Timothy Hutton in the Syfy miniseries Five Days to Midnight. She also played Detective Elaine Bender in the Canadian crime series Blue Murder, a role for which she won a Gemini Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Guest Role (2001).
In 2005, Matchett was cast in the ABC sci-fi series Invasion, which explored themes involving extraterrestrial life forms assimilating into human society. That same year, she starred in Aaron Sorkin’s critically acclaimed but short-lived NBC drama Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as Mary Tate. Additionally, she appeared in series such as Wild Card and Shark.
In 2006, she portrayed a single mother in Intimate Stranger, a thriller centered around stalking and personal trauma. She also appeared alongside Peter Krause in the political thriller film Civic Duty. In 2007, she joined the cast of the popular action series 24 as Lisa Miller and also co-starred in TNT's medical drama Heartland as Kate Armstrong. Between 2007 and 2008, she played Skye Wexler in ER, followed by a role as Jules in the drama series Crash (2008–2009), which aired on Starz to critical acclaim.
Matchett continued her successful on-screen collaborations with actor Timothy Hutton, appearing alongside him in the TNT series Leverage as Maggie Collins. This marked their third professional partnership. In 2011, she appeared in The Tree of Life, one of her most prominent film roles. Directed by Terrence Malick and starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Palme d’Or.
In 1998, Kari Matchett married Canadian television and film director T.W. Peacocke. The couple separated after eight years of marriage and did not have children together. Matchett later entered a relationship with actor James Allodi, with whom she has one child, Jude Lyon Matchett.
Her net worth is estimated to be around $3 million, according to various sources. While she has not yet written an autobiography, she has expressed interest in doing so in the future.
Matchett continues to work in television, notably appearing in the USA Network series Covert Affairs, where she played Joan Campbell, a senior CIA officer. While her film career has not reached the same level of recognition as her television work, she remains active in the industry, consistently taking on meaningful roles and demonstrating her versatility as an actress.
