Kodak Black is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter best known for hit singles such as "Zeze," "Roll in Peace," "Tunnel Vision," and "No Flockin’." His distinctive sound and raw lyrical style have earned him a prominent place in the rap industry.
Born Bill K. Kapri on June 11, 1997, in Pompano Beach, Florida, Kodak Black is of Haitian descent. Raised by his mother after his father left shortly after his birth, he grew up in a challenging environment marked by crime and poverty.
From a young age, Kodak showed an interest in music, beginning to rap while still in elementary school. He frequently visited a local trap house after school to record music. He reportedly spent time enhancing his vocabulary by reading dictionaries and thesauruses, aiming to sharpen his lyrical abilities. However, his adolescence was marred by repeated arrests related to fighting, burglary, and theft. He was expelled from school for fighting and arrested in middle school for auto theft.
Kodak Black is the father of a son named King Khalid, whose mother is Jammiah Broomfield. He previously dated a woman named Cali, who publicly claimed that their relationship ended due to Kodak's repeated infidelities. As of the most recent reports, Kodak has been romantically linked to social media personality Cuban Doll.
Kodak Black's music career began early; at the age of 12, he joined a rap group called Brutal Youngnz, and later became a member of another group called The Kolyons. In 2013, he released his debut mixtape, Project Baby, followed by Heart of the Projects in 2014.
He rose to broader recognition in 2015 when Canadian rapper Drake posted a video on social media dancing to Kodak's song "Skrt." This exposure led to increased attention and eventually a deal with Atlantic Records. He later collaborated with French Montana on the single "Lockjaw," which performed well on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, peaking at number 23.
In November 2019, Kodak Black was sentenced to three years and ten months in federal prison for weapons charges. He had falsified information on federal forms to purchase firearms from a Miami-area gun shop. Although the charges carried a potential maximum sentence of 10 years, Judge Federico Moreno cited his age and history of poor decisions in issuing a reduced sentence, noting, "Young people do stupid things. But the problem is that you’ve been doing stupid things since you were 15."
Kodak expressed remorse during his sentencing, apologizing to the court, his family, and supporters. Despite his legal setbacks, he has continued to release music and maintain a devoted fan base.
