Kris Bryant was born in 1992 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended Bonanza High School, where he played varsity baseball for all four years. During his high school career, Bryant posted impressive statistics, including a .418 batting average, 47 career home runs, 103 hits, and a .958 slugging percentage. He also participated in American Legion Baseball and was named to the USA Today All-USA baseball first team.
Though selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, Bryant opted not to sign. Instead, he enrolled at the University of San Diego to play college baseball for the Toreros. He initially majored in biology but later switched to finance.
During his time at the University of San Diego, Bryant distinguished himself as one of the top college baseball players in the country. In 2013, he won both the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy, honors given annually to the nation’s best amateur baseball player.
As a result of his collegiate success, Bryant was selected second overall in the 2013 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs. He quickly rose through the ranks and was recognized as one of the top prospects in baseball prior to his major league debut.
Kris Bryant made his Major League Baseball debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2015. That season, he was named the National League Rookie of the Year, capping a stellar first year in the majors. The following season, he played a key role in leading the Cubs to a historic World Series title in 2016 — the franchise's first in 108 years. That same year, he was also named the National League Most Valuable Player.
Bryant primarily plays as a third baseman and outfielder, offering flexibility in the field. In 2017, he signed a one-year contract with the Cubs worth $652,000, with the full amount guaranteed. As of recent estimates, his net worth exceeds $10 million.
Growing up in Las Vegas, Bryant developed a close friendship with fellow MLB players Bryce Harper and Joey Gallo, with whom he began playing baseball competitively at the age of nine. In 2015, a memorable moment between Bryant and Harper gained media attention when they shared a playful greeting during a game between the Cubs and the Washington Nationals — an unusual gesture at the Major League level.
Bryant is known for his humility and character off the field. He was named salutatorian of his high school class but offered the honor to a fellow classmate who expressed a strong desire for the recognition. His father, Mike Bryant, played in Minor League Baseball within the Boston Red Sox organization before dedicating his time to coaching Kris, even selling his patio furniture business to focus on his son's development.
In 2017, Kris Bryant married his longtime girlfriend, Jessica Delp. The couple has known each other since they were 16 and both grew up in Las Vegas. One of Bryant’s teammates, Anthony Rizzo, served as a groomsman at their wedding.
Beyond the field, Bryant has had his share of light-hearted moments. In one notable instance, he was pranked by Hall of Famer Greg Maddux during what he believed was a promotional shoot. More details about Kris Bryant’s performance and statistics can be found on his baseball FanGraphs page.
