Lawrence “Larry” Ellison is an American businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, best known as the co-founder, executive chairman, and chief technology officer of Oracle Corporation.
Lawrence Joseph Ellison was born on August 17, 1944, in New York City. He was born to a single mother and, at nine months old, contracted pneumonia. Unable to care for him during his illness, his mother entrusted him to the care of his great-aunt and great-uncle in Chicago, who later adopted him. Ellison did not reconnect with his biological mother until nearly fifty years later.
In 1977, Ellison co-founded Software Development Laboratories (SDL) with an initial personal investment of $1,200. Alongside his partners, he secured a contract to develop a database management system for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), a project codenamed “Oracle.” In 1979, the company was renamed Relational Software Inc., and by 1982, it officially became Oracle Systems Corporation. The company's flagship product revolutionized the database industry and laid the foundation for Oracle’s global success.
As of recent estimates, Larry Ellison ranks among the wealthiest individuals in the world. He is consistently listed in the top tier of global billionaires, with a net worth exceeding $50 billion. He has built substantial wealth through Oracle’s success and strategic technology investments.
