Leland Blane Chapman is an American bounty hunter and bail bondsman best known for his role on the reality television show Dog the Bounty Hunter, which aired for eight seasons before being canceled on May 21, 2012.
Born to Duane Chapman Sr. and his first wife, La Fonda Sue Darnall, Leland is the second of their two sons. At the age of seven, Leland’s father was sentenced to prison, prompting his parents’ divorce. According to Leland, he did not reunite with his father until he was eight years old, after Duane Sr. was granted visitation rights. During this period, Leland mistakenly believed his stepfather was his biological father.
Leland spent his early childhood in Texas and his teenage years in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During his adolescence, he faced significant challenges, including running away from home and briefly joining a gang. Due to behavioral issues, he was placed in foster care and later admitted to a boys’ group home at age 13. Notably, in 1995, Leland became the first among his siblings to graduate from high school, carrying his infant son, Dakota, with him as he walked the graduation stage.
Following his graduation, Leland began working at Da Kine Bail Bonds, the Chapman family's bail bond business located in Hawaii. The company included several family members, such as his father Duane Sr.; stepmother, Beth Chapman; brother, Duane Lee Chapman; and half-sister, Lyssa Chapman ("Baby Lyssa").
Leland gained widespread fame through the A&E reality series Dog the Bounty Hunter, which detailed the family's bounty hunting operations. The show ran from 2004 to 2012. In 2013, Duane and Beth Chapman launched another reality series, Dog and Beth: On the Hunt, on CMT, which aired until August 2015. While the original family business remains operational, Leland has since expanded his professional activities by consulting and supporting similar businesses nationwide.
A defining episode in Leland Chapman's career occurred in 2003 when he, along with his father and associate Tim Chapman, captured fugitive Andrew Luster in Mexico. Because bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico, all three were arrested by Mexican authorities. The legal entanglement stemming from this high-profile capture generated extensive media coverage and is widely acknowledged as a pivotal factor in the Chapman family securing their own television deal.
Leland married Maui Chapman in 1995, the same year he graduated from high school and welcomed their first son. The couple eventually separated in 2005. According to court documents, Maui filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. Though initial proceedings occurred while Leland was incarcerated, he was released before the case concluded. The couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, which reportedly led to a contentious divorce. Custody of their children was awarded to Maui, while Leland retained visitation rights.
Speculation surrounded the reasons for their divorce, including rumors of Leland’s infidelity, although no concrete evidence was ever presented. Over the years, various unconfirmed reports linked him romantically with women such as a woman named Lynette—reportedly a member of the military—despite no verified public association. Rumors also surfaced in 2008 that Leland dated actress Jennifer Grey, a claim never confirmed or denied by either party. In 2009, unverified rumors suggested he was dating a significantly younger woman named Koryn, reinforcing his pattern of keeping personal relationships private.
Despite years of speculation and privacy regarding his romantic life, it is now known that Leland Chapman is married to Jamie Pilar Chapman. Jamie, a tattoo model and public personality, has shared glimpses of their life together on social media. By most appearances, the couple enjoys a strong relationship and is frequently seen spending quality time together.
