Luke Aaron Benward was born on May 12, 1995, in Franklin, Tennessee, to Kenda and Aaron Benward. His father, Aaron Benward, is one-half of the country music duo Blue County, while his mother, Kenda, was formerly a model and is now an actress and acting coach.
Luke's interest in acting began early, influenced by accompanying his mother to her auditions. At the age of seven, he landed his first role in the 2002 film We Were Soldiers, playing David Moore. Shortly after, he appeared as Jody Davis in the television series Family Affair. He also featured in the Grammy-nominated music video for Martina McBride's “Concrete Angel,” portraying a young boy.
In 2004, Luke made a cameo in Blue County’s music video for the song “That’s Cool.” His early performances showcased his talent and earned him more prominent roles, including Stevie Dewberry in Because of Winn-Dixie (2005). His breakout role came in 2006’s How to Eat Fried Worms, where he played Billy Forrester. For this performance, Luke and his castmates received the 2007 Young Artist Award for Best Young Ensemble.
In 2008, Luke starred as Charlie Tuttle in the Disney Channel Original Movie Minutemen, which featured a storyline around time travel. That same year, he appeared in the family comedies Dog Gone and Mostly Ghostly: Who Let the Ghosts Out?, showcasing his versatility in comedic roles.
Following in his family's footsteps, Luke pursued a music career in the country genre. In 2009, he released his debut EP titled Let Your Love Out. He was signed by In Crowd Productions, a label known for working with artists such as Hilary Duff, Mat Kearney, the Backstreet Boys, and the Jonas Brothers.
In 2010, Luke appeared in the romantic drama Dear John as Alan Wheddon. He returned to the Disney Channel in 2012, starring as Ryan Dean in the movie Girl vs. Monster. His character was the love interest of Skylar Lewis, portrayed by Olivia Holt, with whom he later had a two-year relationship, ending in 2014.
Benward had recurring roles on several TV shows, including Matthew Pearson in See Dad Run and Beau Landry in Good Luck Charlie. In 2013, he was cast as one of the main characters in ABC Family’s supernatural drama Ravenswood. His frequent collaborations with Disney continued with the 2014 movie Cloud 9, where he played the male lead.
From 2014 to 2015, Luke guest-starred in several television series, including The Goldbergs, R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, and CSI. He also appeared in the historical war drama Field of Lost Shoes as John Wise, expanding his repertoire into more dramatic and mature roles.
