Lzzy Hale, born Elizabeth Mae Hale on October 10, 1983, in Red Lion, Pennsylvania, is an American rock musician best known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the band Halestorm. Her mother worked as a financial manager, and her father was a bus driver. Although her parents initially encouraged her to consider careers in fields like management or medicine, Lzzy decided early on to pursue music—something she described as an inevitable calling.
Hale began playing the piano at the age of four. In her teenage years, she taught herself to play the guitar, which would eventually become a defining skill in her music career and the founding of Halestorm. Her younger brother, Arejay Hale, also developed a passion for music, becoming the band's drummer. Despite their initial reservations, Lzzy’s parents supported her ambitions wholeheartedly. She once referred to her family dynamic as “The Partridge Family meets Spinal Tap,” noting, “When my brother and I got tunnel vision and said this is really what we want to do, my mom and dad told us to go for it now and they’d be behind it the whole way. If they had said no, we wouldn’t be doing this right now.”
Lzzy Hale received her early education in local schools near Red Lion, Pennsylvania. She later attended William Penn Senior High School in Harrisburg, PA, where she was known as a diligent student, earning straight A’s. She also participated in her school choir. Though she did not pursue a college education, Lzzy’s career success has demonstrated that formal academic paths are not the only way to achieve greatness in the music industry.
Lzzy and Arejay Hale began their musical journeys at a young age, both learning to play the piano by the time they were five. By their early teens, the siblings were already composing and performing original songs. Hale’s professional music career began at age 14, and by 16, she had added guitar to her growing list of instruments. Their father initially joined the band as their drummer, making it a true family affair.
Lzzy has continued to involve her parents in her professional life. In a past interview, she shared, “I let my parents work for me—mom is [tour manager], and dad is [our] bus driver—because it’s my way of giving back to them. They sacrificed a lot to enable my brother and I to pursue our dream. Plus, they are very good at the jobs they were given. It’s wonderful to watch them experience all our milestones with us.”
In 1999, the Hale siblings independently released an EP titled Don't Mess With the Time Man. Soon after, they were joined by guitarist Joe Hottinger and bassist Josh Smith, solidifying the lineup of Halestorm. The band officially signed with Atlantic Records in the mid-2000s, marking a turning point in their career trajectory.
Halestorm quickly gained traction in the rock music scene, fueled by Lzzy’s powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence. The band gained additional recognition after appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2010. In 2012, Halestorm made history as the first female-fronted group to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Active Rock chart, a feat they accomplished three times in succession. That same year, they also became the first female-fronted rock band to win the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.
To date, Lzzy Hale has released multiple studio albums with Halestorm, including their self-titled debut Halestorm (2009), The Strange Case Of... (2012), and Vicious (2018), among others. Known for their relentless touring schedule, the band is reported to perform nearly 250 shows annually, solidifying their reputation as one of the hardest working acts in rock music.
In 2014, the Gibson Guitar Corporation released a signature Lzzy Hale Explorer guitar, recognizing her influence and musicianship. Her musical inspirations include Heart, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Sevendust, Pat Benatar, and Alice in Chains. During an interview with Cleverscene, she remarked, “I grew up with [Cinderella singer] Tom Keifer on my wall. I’ve always been 10 years behind. My dad is into any band with a color in its name: Blue Öyster Cult, Deep Purple, and Pink Floyd. My mom gave me Heart, Janis Joplin, and Pat Benatar.”
In 2013, Lzzy launched a clothing and accessories line called Scissor Happy. According to Hale, each item in the four-piece collection was made by hand while she was on tour. The line featured unisex designs and was praised for reflecting her personal style.
Lzzy Hale is currently not married but has been in a long-standing relationship with fellow Halestorm guitarist Joe Hottinger. She has shared in interviews that she has personal reservations about marriage due to witnessing challenges in her parents’ relationship. In 2021, Hale publicly came out as bisexual, further solidifying her role as an advocate for LGBTQ+ visibility in the rock music community.
