Matthew Roloff was born on the October 7, 1961. Matthew is most known for being the father on the TLC (The Learning Channel) reality TV series called Little People, Big World. The hit show was praised for giving a peek into the life of a dwarf family. Throughout history and in the media, dwarfs have been unfortunately viewed as funny looking objects instead of real people. With party activities such as dwarf tossing, it was hard for dwarfs to be taken seriously. In the acting world, they always had to take unpleasant jobs such as a clown or an angry elf just so that they could pay the bills. Even when there is just a regular civilian who is a dwarf walking down the city streets, they always get second looks because they are so different. Roloff’s show was a milestone for dwarfs because they finally got some representation to show that they are normal and just like any other person living in this world.
Matthew parlayed the success of the show and the notoriety he gained from it into many new roles for himself. He can now call himself an actor, an author, a farmer, an entrepreneur and a motivational speaker. In Matthew’s case, if you were to judge him by his height only, you would say that he was quite small. If you were to judge him by his ambition and drive, you would say that he is a giant crushing all the new challenges in his life.
From birth, Matthew was a diastrophic dysplasia patient. The condition resulted in his small stature. Matt had to undergo multiple surgeries during his childhood. What many people would have seen as a disadvantage, Matthew flipped the stereotype upside down and created an amazing life for himself. Instead of getting down on himself for being small, he recognized that it made he unique and special. His parents Ron and Peggy were also involved in the reality show and very supportive of their son.
Matthew’s sibling Sam also suffers from the same disease as Matthew but he also worked hard to overcome it. Sam is now working as an entrepreneur. Matthew met his eventual wife, Amy when they were attending an event called Little People of America in 1987. Like many little people, Matt’s wife also had a medical condition. Amy suffered from a disease called achondroplasia. The couple had four children together. Sadly, their marriage ended in divorce during 2015.
Little People, Big World was Matthew’s big break but it actually wasn’t his first time on screen. Matthew started off his acting career when he appeared in a film called Under the Rainbow. He was just an extra then and was hardly noticed. Gradually, Matthew was able to carve his niche in the acting world. His first significant role was for a Star Wars TV movie where he played an Ewok. Ewoks are small alien creatures that fit well with Matthew’s physical frame. Anyone would be happy to play a role in a Star Wars project so there was no shame for Matthew when he portrayed a little furry alien.
Matthew is very talented and could make a living even if he wasn’t an actor. Matthew is a computer programmer and has worked for many IT companies in Silicon Valley. He has also worked as a freelance software developer and has sold projects to various prestigious software companies. Matt and his family even moved to Portland when he took a position to work for Sequent Computer Systems.

The success Matthew has reached did not make him turn his back on his people. He is actively involved in improving the lives of little people around the world. He created a venture called Direct Access Solutions, a hospitality company which provides accessibility products to little people.
The reality show Little People, Big World is Matthew’s biggest vehicle in raising positive awareness for little people. He is an executive producer for the show which has successfully been on air for multiple seasons. Even though Amy and Matthew are divorced, they have still attempted to be respectful of each other for their children and the reality show. The show’s exposure allowed Matthew to travel the world to and meet various little people. He documented their daily lives and also offered a helping hand whenever he could.
Matthew’s motivational speaking has been inspiring and praised by many different people. He is famous for speeches which range from overcoming your shortcomings to how to improve your businesses. He has been a speaker at many corporate events and universities. He is also a member of the National Speakers Association of America. Matthew is now seen as an on demand celebrity that is often called upon for popular talk shows like like the Oprah Winfrey Show and many late night talk shows.
Matthew has even taken his motivational speaking to his books. He is the proud author of books, Against Tall Odds: Being a David In the Goliath World (1999) and Little Family, Big Values: Lessons in Love, Respect and Understanding for Families of Any Size (2007). The multiple ventures of Matthew Roloff have made him given him a strong presence which has led to a large estimated net worth to 4.5 million.
Even though Matthew has done a lot of his family, for himself, and for little people around the world, nobody is perfect. Matthew has been involved in a few legal issues and controversies. These include entering premises without permission and also driving under the influence. The trespassing incident can be forgiven but the DUI is harder to ignore. Matthew should have been more aware of how alcohol would affect his small body and his mind. Driving is already difficult enough for little people, adding a disadvantage like being drunk just makes it harder. By drinking and driving, Matthew put more at risk than just his own life. He put the lives of other people on the road at risk, he put his family at risk, and he put his fans at risk. If something tragic had happened to Matthew, he would have not been able to be a champion of little people like he has in recent years.
