Foster, who is half Swedish, was born and raised in England. He graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in Business Administration. He went on to complete his postgraduate studies in Broadcast Journalism at Highbury College in Portsmouth. He is married and currently resides with his wife and three children in Berkshire.
Foster began his broadcasting career at the age of 16, hosting a weekly program on Hospital Radio Swindon. During his university years, he gained experience as a reporter at the local BBC office. He was later offered a position at BBC Radio Five, which led to a two-year stint at BBC Wiltshire Sound. At the age of 24, he moved to the BBC World Service before transitioning to BBC Television, where he anchored business-focused programs such as Business Breakfast on BBC World and the Working Lunch show.
After spending over a decade at the BBC, Foster joined CNN. Following his coverage of the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, he was appointed royal correspondent. In that role, he accompanied the royal couple on their tours of North America and the South Pacific region, contributing in-depth reports and analysis.
Throughout his career, Foster has covered a broad spectrum of major global events. His reporting highlights include the Asian Financial Crisis, the introduction of the Euro, and an investigative story on online banking that resulted in a bank temporarily shutting down its website. He has also reported on the 2006 Lebanon War, the 2007 attempted car bombings in London, and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, particularly the levee failures around New Orleans. Additional major assignments include the 2008 Mumbai attacks and in-depth features on the street art movements of Adam Neate and Banksy. His acclaimed interview with author Stephenie Meyer has been cited in numerous books and magazines.
Foster has interviewed a wide array of high-profile individuals, including the prime ministers of Iraq, Sweden, Haiti, and the United Kingdom; the presidents of the Maldives, Georgia, and the European Commission; and notable business leaders such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and George Soros. In 2013, he succeeded Richard Quest as anchor of CNN’s weekly show Marketplace Europe, where he conducts interviews with prominent chief executives from across the continent. Additionally, Foster hosts international forums such as the Astana Economic Forum, the UNWTO Global Tourism Forum, and the ATAG Aviation and Environment Summit.
He was also the first journalist to interview Prince William following the birth of Prince George. The interview, focused on wildlife conservation and endangered species, was scheduled for international broadcast on CNN in September of that year.
