Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington; his father was a lawyer and his mother served on the board of directors for the First Interstate BancSystem and the United Way. Bill Gates wrote his first software program while attending the private preparatory school known as the Lakeside School; it was at Lakeside School where Gates met Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Gates was a National Merit Scholar and went on to enroll at Harvard University, where he met fellow classmate and future Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft, which would become the largest personal computer software company in the world, in 1975. In 2009, Bill Gates, along with investor Warren Buffet, founded The Giving Pledge, which allowed them and other billionaires the opportunity to give at least half their wealth to charity.
