Steve Ballmer is an American businessman and investor best known for his tenure as the chief executive officer of Microsoft and as the current owner of the NBA team, the Los Angeles Clippers.
Steven Anthony Ballmer was born on March 24, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan. He showed early aptitude in both academics and leadership. Ballmer graduated from Harvard University in 1977 with degrees in applied mathematics and economics. After college, he worked for two years at Procter & Gamble as an assistant product manager. He then enrolled at Stanford University Graduate School of Business but left before completing his MBA.
In 1980, Ballmer left Stanford to join Microsoft as a business manager, becoming the company’s 30th employee. He was recruited by Bill Gates, a former Harvard classmate and Microsoft’s co-founder. Over the next two decades, Ballmer held multiple roles within the company, including Senior Vice President of Sales and Support, President, and ultimately CEO, a role he held from 2000 to 2014.
Under Ballmer’s leadership, Microsoft expanded its enterprise solutions and introduced products such as the Xbox gaming console and the Surface tablet. Although his tenure included some missteps in mobile and search ventures, Microsoft remained one of the most profitable technology companies globally during his time as CEO.
In 2014, Ballmer purchased the Los Angeles Clippers for $2 billion after the NBA forced the sale from former owner Donald Sterling. Ballmer brought a new level of enthusiasm and financial investment to the team. In July 2019, he demonstrated his unrestrained excitement during the unveiling of superstar players Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, expressing his passionate support with cheers and high energy. The acquisitions were widely recognized as defining moments for the franchise and reinvigorated its competitive standing in the NBA.
As of recent estimates, Ballmer has a net worth exceeding $100 billion, placing him among the wealthiest individuals in the world. Much of his wealth comes from stock holdings in Microsoft. Ballmer is also a philanthropist, having donated substantial funds to initiatives related to education, economic mobility, and data transparency through his nonprofit organization, USAFacts.
Steve Ballmer resides in Hunts Point, Washington, with his wife, Connie Snyder, whom he married in 1990. Connie has long been active in nonprofit work, particularly in child welfare and education advocacy. She serves on the board of several nonprofit organizations.
The couple has three sons: Sam, Peter, and Aaron Ballmer. All three attended Lakeside School, where Connie Snyder has served on the Board of Trustees since 2004. Sam graduated with a degree in Cognitive Science from the University of Southern California and has worked in digital marketing and financial advising. Peter studied Computer Science at Stanford University and currently works as a Rotational Product Manager at Zynga. Aaron graduated from Saint Bonaventure University and is a Strength and Conditioning Coach Intern at Brown University.
