Kurt Vogel Russell was born on March 17, 1951, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He grew up in Thousand Oaks, California, with his parents, actor Bing Russell and dancer Louise Julia Russell. Encouraged by his father's involvement in the entertainment industry, Russell began acting at a young age. He made a brief appearance in the 1963 Elvis Presley film It Happened at the World's Fair and later starred in the television Western series The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters (1963–64), establishing himself as a child actor.

Russell's career took a significant leap forward when he was cast as Snake Plissken in John Carpenter's 1981 sci-fi action film Escape from New York. The role launched his image as a gritty, action-oriented leading man. He reprised the iconic character in the 1996 sequel, Escape from L.A.

In 2007, he appeared in the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse, portraying stuntman Mike in Death Proof. He later joined the high-profile Fast & Furious franchise, playing Mr. Nobody, beginning with Furious 7 (2015), which was notably affected by the untimely death of actor Paul Walker. In 1979, Russell married actress Season Hubley, his co-star in the television film Elvis, where he portrayed Elvis Presley. The couple had one son, Boston Russell, before divorcing in 1983. The following year, Russell began a long-term relationship with actress Goldie Hawn, after they co-starred in Swing Shift (1984). The couple has remained together ever since, and they have a son, Wyatt Russell, born in 1986, who has followed in his father's footsteps as an actor and former professional hockey player.
