Jose Miguel Cabrera Torres, known professionally as Miguel Cabrera and often nicknamed "Miggy," was born in 1983 in Maracay, Aragua State, Venezuela. He showed significant promise in baseball from a young age and eventually pursued a career in the sport with full support from his parents, Gregoria and Miguel Cabrera. His Venezuelan heritage remains an important part of his identity both personally and professionally.
Cabrera began his professional baseball career after signing a contract with the Florida Marlins and quickly advanced through the minor league system. At the age of 20, he made his Major League debut in 2003. That same year, he played a crucial role in the Marlins’ successful World Series run. Following four strong seasons with the Marlins, Cabrera was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 2007.
Since joining the Detroit Tigers, Cabrera has become one of the most accomplished first basemen in Major League Baseball. Although he began his career playing both third and first base, as well as stints in left and right field during 2006, he eventually settled into first base as his primary position.
Throughout his career, Cabrera has been selected to the MLB All-Star Game 11 times. He earned the American League Most Valuable Player (AL MVP) Award twice, in 2012 and 2013. Additionally, he has been named the AL Batting Champion multiple times, recognizing his elite performance at the plate.
In 2012, Cabrera achieved the rare and prestigious MLB Triple Crown in batting, becoming the first player to do so in 45 years—since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. During that standout season, Cabrera led the American League with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs, and 139 RBIs, earning that year’s AL MVP award. He followed up in 2013 with an even higher batting average of .348, securing his second consecutive AL MVP title.
Miguel Cabrera is widely regarded as one of the greatest pure hitters in baseball history. He possesses a rare combination of power, plate discipline, and consistency. Known for his strong batting average, high walk rate, and relatively low strikeout percentage, Cabrera has hit 30 or more home runs in ten separate seasons. His ability to drive the ball to all fields—with a strong mix of line drives and fly balls—has made him a perennial offensive threat.
Outside of baseball, Cabrera is committed to giving back to his community. He established The Miguel Cabrera Foundation to support youth baseball and softball programs, as well as other children’s charities. He remains actively involved in philanthropic efforts that benefit children and aspiring athletes.
He is married to Rosangel Cabrera, and the couple has three children. In 2016, Cabrera sustained a left knee contusion but continued to deliver strong performances for the Tigers. That same year, his annual salary was $28 million, contributing to an estimated net worth of $90 million.
Fans can keep up with Cabrera through social media platforms and baseball analytics sites such as Twitter and FanGraphs, where his career statistics and performance metrics continue to be analyzed and celebrated.
