Michael Pettaway Tomlin, commonly known as Mike Tomlin, was born in 1972 in Virginia. He is the younger of two brothers; his older brother, Eddie, is three and a half years his senior. His biological father, Ed Tomlin, played football at Hampton Institute in the 1960s and was drafted by the Baltimore Colts. Ed later played for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League. He passed away in 2012 at the age of 63 due to a heart attack. Although Mike did not have a close relationship with his father, he was raised by his mother, Julia, and his stepfather, Leslie Copeland, who worked as a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in the 1980s.
Tomlin attended The College of William & Mary, where he majored in biology. It was there that he met his future wife, Kiya Winston. The couple married and have three children: Michael Dean (born in 2000), Mason (born in 2002), and Harlynn Quinn (born in 2006). The family currently resides in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. They are active members of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
During his college years, Tomlin was initiated into the Eta Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity at Old Dominion University. He was also a charter member of the Xi Theta Chapter at The College of William & Mary. He has often been noted for his physical resemblance to actor Omar Epps, a similarity that was humorously referenced in a 2009 episode of the television series House during its sixth season.
Mike Tomlin is the current head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). He succeeded Bill Cowher as head coach in 2007 and quickly made a name for himself. Tomlin is the youngest head coach in NFL history to lead a team to a Super Bowl victory, achieving this milestone in 2009 when the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII. He also became the first African American head coach in the history of the Steelers, and the tenth in NFL history at the time of his appointment. Tomlin is recognized as one of the youngest head coaches across the four major professional sports leagues in North America.
Mike Tomlin earns an annual salary of $5.75 million, placing him among the highest-paid coaches in the NFL. He ranks sixth in terms of NFL coaching salaries and eighth among professional sports coaches overall. His net worth is estimated at approximately $16 million, amassed through his successful and historic coaching career.
