Mira Sorvino, an American actress, was born in New York City. Her mother, Lorraine Ruth Davis, is a former actress and drama therapist who worked with Alzheimer's patients. Her father, Paul Sorvino, was a well-known character actor and film director. Mira has two siblings, Amanda and Michael, and is of Italian descent on her father's side.
Sorvino was raised in New Jersey, where she began writing and performing backyard plays with her friend and future actress Hope Davis. She later participated in theater productions at Dwight-Englewood School. She was accepted into Harvard University, where she spent a year studying in Beijing as a student with CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange). During her time in China, she became fluent in Mandarin Chinese. In 1989, she graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in East Asian Studies. While at Harvard, she co-founded the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones, a co-ed a cappella group, in 1985.
Sorvino gained widespread recognition for her performance in Woody Allen’s film Mighty Aphrodite. Her role as a kind-hearted prostitute earned her both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. This breakout role established her as a talented and versatile performer in Hollywood.
She went on to star in a number of diverse films, including Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, Mimic, Like Dandelion Dust, and Summer of Sam. Her role in the HBO movie Norma Jean & Marilyn earned her nominations for an Emmy and a Golden Globe. She also received award nominations for her portrayal of an immigration agent in the miniseries Human Trafficking, which helped shine a spotlight on the issue of modern slavery.
Sorvino began her film career behind the scenes. She was hired as the third assistant director for the 1993 independent film Amongst Friends, and was subsequently promoted to casting director, then assistant producer, and eventually offered a lead acting role. Her work in the film garnered positive reviews and opened doors to further acting opportunities, including a small part in Robert Redford’s Quiz Show.
She continued her career with appearances on television, including a memorable guest role in the “Frozen” episode of the medical drama House. Her character had potential for further development, but the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike halted those plans.
From 1996 to 1998, Sorvino was in a relationship with filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, who accompanied her to the Academy Awards when she received her Oscar. In 2003, she met actor Christopher Backus at a charades party hosted by a mutual friend. The couple married in a private ceremony in Santa Barbara, California, and later held a celebration in Italy. They have four children—two daughters and two sons.
A committed activist, Sorvino has been affiliated with Amnesty International since 2004. In 2006, she was honored with the Artist of Conscience Award for her work in raising awareness of global human rights violations. She also served as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador focused on combating human trafficking, using her platform to advocate for the protection and empowerment of vulnerable communities.
Sorvino identifies as a Christian and has cited her faith as a guiding force in both her personal life and humanitarian work.
