Myrna Colley-Lee is an American artist and philanthropist, born in 1941 in Hamlet, North Carolina. She earned a bachelor's degree in art education from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Following her undergraduate studies, she pursued painting and properties at Brooklyn College in New York. In 1980, she completed a master's degree in scenic and costume design from Temple University in Philadelphia.
Colley-Lee gained public attention through her marriage to acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman, which began in 1984. The couple resided primarily in northern Mississippi, spending most of their time at Freeman’s home in Tallahatchie County. Throughout their marriage, they maintained a low-profile lifestyle, frequently distancing themselves from Hollywood's spotlight.
After more than two decades of marriage, Colley-Lee and Freeman separated, with divorce proceedings commencing in the mid-2000s. Though initial reports suggested they filed for divorce in 2007, the legal proceedings took several years. The divorce was finalized in 2010, as confirmed by Freeman's attorney, William R. Wright, who stated, "It was done without a trial. Everybody is glad it’s over."
Aside from her personal life, Myrna Colley-Lee has established a respected career in the arts, especially in the fields of theatrical scenic and costume design. Her work has been featured in numerous productions and exhibitions across the United States. She is also recognized for her philanthropic efforts, especially within the Mississippi Delta region, supporting arts education and African American cultural heritage. Through both her professional contributions and philanthropy, she continues to influence future generations of artists and designers.
