Pernell-Karl Sylvester "P. K." Subban was born on May 13, 1989, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is the son of Caribbean immigrants who moved to Ontario in the 1970s. Raised in Toronto’s Rexdale neighborhood, he grew up alongside two sisters and two brothers in a close-knit, sports-oriented family.
Subban began his junior hockey career with the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). His exceptional performance on the ice gained attention early on, showcasing his offensive capabilities and dynamic playing style as a defenseman.
In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Subban was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round, 43rd overall. After continuing to develop his skills, he was signed by the Canadiens to a three-year contract in May 2009.
Subban began the 2009–2010 season with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Montreal’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. He was later recalled to the NHL on April 26, 2010, during the Canadiens’ playoff series against the Washington Capitals in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
After contributing to the Canadiens' playoff run, which ended with their elimination by the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference Final, Subban returned briefly to the Bulldogs to complete the AHL season. For his significant contributions both on and off the ice, Subban received the AHL President's Award that year.
Subban quickly established himself as one of the league’s top defensemen. In 2013, he achieved a career milestone by winning the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL's best defenseman. Known for his strong skating, powerful shot, and charismatic personality, Subban became a cornerstone of the Canadiens' defense.
In the summer of 2014, Subban signed a landmark eight-year, $72 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens, making him one of the highest-paid defensemen in the league at that time. The agreement was set to run through the 2021–2022 season, marking a vote of confidence in his talent and long-term value to the team.
