Phil Alfred Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California. His father, Philip Mickelson, was a commercial airline pilot. Phil spent his childhood in both San Diego and Scottsdale, Arizona. Although naturally right-handed, he developed a left-handed golf swing by mirroring his father’s movements while watching him practice. Remarkably, Phil began playing golf before he even started school. The nature of his father's job allowed them ample time together, much of which was spent on the course, where his father introduced him to the fundamentals of the sport. Phil attended San Diego High School, graduating in 1988.
Mickelson enrolled at Arizona State University on a golf scholarship, thanks to his exceptional abilities. He graduated in 1992. During his time at ASU, he emerged as a standout in amateur golf in the United States. He won multiple tournaments and accolades, including three Haskins Awards and three NCAA individual championships. Notably, he became the first left-handed golfer to win the U.S. Amateur title.
In 1991, while still an amateur, Mickelson secured his first PGA Tour victory at the Northern Telecom Open, becoming one of the few amateurs in history to win a PGA Tour event. This early success cemented his reputation as a rising star in the sport even before he turned professional.
After graduating in 1992, Mickelson turned professional and rapidly climbed the ranks to become one of the most accomplished players in golf. Despite consistent performances and multiple tournament wins, a major championship victory eluded him for over a decade. That changed in 2004 when he won the Masters Tournament—his first major title. This long-awaited win marked a turning point in his career.
Over the years, Mickelson would go on to win six major championships—including three Masters titles, two PGA Championships, and one Open Championship—making him one of the most successful golfers in the modern era. His achievements and popularity contributed to his financial success, placing him among the richest golfers worldwide.
After a strong run through the 2000s, Mickelson faced challenges during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. In response, he hired a new swing coach in an effort to revitalize his game and continue competing at the highest level.
Phil Mickelson is married to Amy Mickelson, and together they have three children: Amanda, Sophia, and Evan. Away from the course, family has remained a central aspect of his life.
Throughout his career, Mickelson has secured notable endorsements with prominent companies such as Rolex, Barclays, and Ford. These sponsorships reflect both his success on the course and his marketability off it.
In 2010, Mickelson was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, a chronic condition that affects the joints and skin. Despite the diagnosis, he continued competing and has shown remarkable resilience in managing the condition while maintaining a high level of play.
Standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing around 200 pounds, Phil Mickelson remains a powerful presence in the golfing world. Beginning his golf journey in early childhood under the guidance of his father, he has grown into one of the most recognized and accomplished golfers in the United States. Despite ups and downs in recent seasons, Mickelson continues to participate actively in professional golf, with fans and analysts alike anticipating his return to top form.
