Phil Alfred Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California. His father, Philip Mickelson, was a commercial airline pilot. Phil spent his childhood in both San Diego and Scottsdale, Arizona. Although naturally right-handed, he developed a left-handed golf swing by mirroring his father’s movements while watching him practice. Remarkably, Phil began playing golf before he even started school. The nature of his father's job allowed them ample time together, much of which was spent on the course, where his father introduced him to the fundamentals of the sport. Phil attended San Diego High School, graduating in 1988.
Mickelson enrolled at Arizona State University on a golf scholarship, thanks to his exceptional abilities. He graduated in 1992. During his time at ASU, he emerged as a standout in amateur golf in the United States. He won multiple tournaments and accolades, including three Haskins Awards and three NCAA individual championships. Notably, he became the first left-handed golfer to win the U.S. Amateur title.
In 1991, while still an amateur, Mickelson secured his first PGA Tour victory at the Northern Telecom Open, becoming one of the few amateurs in history to win a PGA Tour event. This early success cemented his reputation as a rising star in the sport even before he turned professional.
