He currently serves as a special correspondent for CNN, where he focuses on environmental and humanitarian issues. Cousteau is the co-founder and President of EarthEcho International, a non-profit organization dedicated to engaging and empowering youth to take action for a more sustainable planet.
Born in California, Philippe Cousteau spent much of his childhood traveling between the United States and France. He earned a master’s degree in History from the University of St Andrews in Scotland. His international upbringing and academic background have influenced his global perspective on environmental conservation.
Outside his professional pursuits, Philippe enjoys a range of adventure sports, including snowboarding, rock climbing, diving, and trekking. He is engaged to Ashlan Gorse, an entertainment journalist.
Philippe Cousteau has built a notable career as a media personality focusing on environmental and ocean-related issues. He served as Chief Ocean Correspondent for Animal Planet and Planet Green, where he worked on several ocean-themed documentaries, such as Ocean’s Deadliest. Tragically, while filming this documentary, his co-host Steve Irwin was fatally injured by a stingray, an incident that brought significant global attention to ocean wildlife.
He later became a special correspondent for CNN, contributing to the series Going Green, which highlights critical issues like climate change and humanitarian challenges. Philippe also hosted the series Oceans Blue, which aired in 2010 on Planet Green in the United States and was co-produced by Discovery Networks and the BBC.
In 2000, Philippe co-founded EarthEcho International with his mother and sister in honor of his grandfather Jacques Cousteau’s environmental legacy. The organization’s mission is to inspire and equip young people to protect and restore the environment. Through educational programs and community engagement, EarthEcho International seeks to cultivate environmental responsibility among youth around the world.
He also co-founded Azure Worldwide, a firm focused on environmental consulting, development, marketing, and media. As a Fellow of OpenGrounds at the University of Virginia, Cousteau contributes to the development of innovative educational tools, including interactive games that teach users about global freshwater issues.
Cousteau has participated in various high-impact collaborations, including a partnership with the U.S. Department of State as the chief spokesperson for the USA Pavilion at Expo 2012 in South Korea. He has also worked in affiliation with the Global Echo Foundation and played a role in the launch of the Global Echo Exchange Traded Fund, which supports sustainable investing initiatives.
Philippe Cousteau has co-authored environmental education books aimed at engaging younger audiences. His book, Going Blue: A Teen Guide to Saving the Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, and Wetlands, received several accolades, including the Teachers’ Choice Award from Learning Magazine, a Gold Nautilus Award, and the Book of the Year Gold Award. He also authored an environmental education book for elementary-aged students to further broaden his outreach to youth.
In 2010, Philippe and his sister Alexandra Cousteau were recognized by Vanity Fair in its Next Establishment list for their commitment to environmental advocacy. Their work continues to influence conversations around sustainability and conservation on both national and global stages.
